Brushing techniques for winter coat length.

Once your dog’s coat is a little longer, a brush alone isn’t enough. A slicker brush works on the surface, but it can glide right over a tangle hiding down near the skin. That’s where the comb comes in. Brush first, then go back over the same spot with a comb, all the way down to the skin. If the comb moves through smoothly, you’re good. If it snags, you’ve found something to work on before it turns into a mat.

Work in small sections instead of skimming the top. Hold the hair up with one hand, brush the layer underneath, then comb it through. A few minutes a few times a week does far more than one long session on the weekend.

Give extra time to behind the ears, under the front legs, the backs of the back legs, and the feathering on the chest and belly. Those spots rub, move, and get damp the most, so they tangle first. If the comb catches, go gently and hold the hair at the skin so it doesn’t pull. If it won’t budge, save it for us.

Brushing and combing together is the simplest way to keep a longer coat soft and comfortable all winter.

As a local business that believes in giving back to the community, this year Comb and Collar Pet Grooming will have a decorated wreath in the 45th Annual Holiday Tree Festival hosted by Akron Children’s Hospital which runs from November 14 through November 22, 2026 at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron.

We’re incredibly grateful to have the opportunity to support Akron Children’s Hospital and the amazing work they do for children and families in our community.

As a local business, giving back is something that means so much to us. We know that behind every child is a family hoping, praying, and believing for better days. Being able to support an organization that brings hope, healing, and care to those families is truly an honor.

To our amazing clients: thank you. Your support of our business helps make it possible for us to give back to causes that touch so many lives. ❤️

We’re proud to stand with Akron Children’s Hospital and grateful to be part of something bigger than ourselves. Together, we can make a difference.

“Why does it cost more?”

People often assume that if a groom costs more, it’s because it takes longer.

Sometimes it does.

But a lot of times, it doesn’t.

A senior pet.

A seizure-prone pet.

A behaviorally challenged pet.

A medically fragile pet.

Those appointments don’t just require more time. They require more judgment.

Knowing when to stop.

Knowing when to take a break.

Knowing when to change the haircut.

Knowing when the safest decision isn’t the prettiest one.

You’re not paying for the extra 30 minutes.

You’re paying for the years it took your groomer to know what to do in those 30 minutes.

Experience has value.

Just because someone can do something efficiently doesn’t mean it was easy to learn. In fact, it’s usually the opposite.

Appreciate your groomers!

Sometimes groomers notice health changes before anyone else does.

And honestly, that’s not because owners aren’t paying attention. Life is busy. You see your dog every single day, so tiny changes can happen gradually without standing out right away.

But groomers? We’re seeing and feeling your dog up close during every appointment.

That means sometimes we notice things like new lumps, irritated skin, ear infections starting, changes in mobility, sore spots, or even tics hiding under all that fluff.

And that’s exactly why routine grooming matters so much. It’s not just about looking cute after an appointment. It’s another set of caring eyes on your dog’s health and comfort.

Honestly, dogs with owners who keep up with regular grooming appointments are often the ones who get small issues caught earlier — and that can make such a big difference long term, because we know you love your little heartbeat at your feet more than anything in the world!🐶🐾💕

Humanity Over Vanity
In dog grooming, humanity over vanity means always putting your pet’s physical and emotional well-being above appearance or “perfect” looks.
It’s the choice to:
• Leave the face slightly damp instead of drying it bone-dry
• Scissor the legs for a softer finish rather than running clippers over sensitive skin
• Shave out matting instead of brushing it out aggressively
This philosophy is the result of deep knowledge, refined skill, proven technique, years of experience, and genuine compassion.
By choosing humanity over vanity, we help create a confident, trusting dog who associates grooming with positive experiences instead of fear. We never want to push a dog to its breaking point—shaking, panting, crying, pooping, biting, or vomiting from stress. That’s not grooming; that’s trauma.
Our shared goal as groomer and owner is to help the dog, not hinder them. Open communication is essential. Ask your groomer how they handle your dog’s specific needs:
• Will they hold the dog down and push through the groom?
• Will they brush until both the dog and groomer are exhausted and upset?
• Or will they slow down, offer breaks, adjust their approach, and shave matting when necessary?
The best groomers understand that a slightly less “fluffy” or “perfect” dog who leaves happy and relaxed is always better than a beautifully groomed dog who is terrified of the next appointment.
Humanity over vanity isn’t about cutting corners—it’s about doing what’s right for the dog.

For many dogs, summer means one thing...

Swimming.

Whether it's the lake, the pool, or a sprinkler in the backyard, water can be a wonderful way for dogs to cool off and have fun. But once the adventure is over, their coat still needs a little attention.

Lake water can leave behind dirt and debris. Pool chemicals can dry the skin and coat. Even clean water can stay trapped in a thick coat, creating the perfect environment for hot spots or skin irritation if it isn't dried thoroughly.

Don't forget about the ears, either. Moisture left inside the ear canal—especially after frequent swimming—can create an environment where ear infections are more likely to develop. Gently drying the ears after swimming and keeping them clean can go a long way toward preventing problems.

Summer adventures and coat care go hand in hand.

A few extra minutes after swimming can help prevent problems that are much harder to fix later.

A little care after the fun helps keep the fun going all summer long.

The science behind dog grooming:

When a dog’s coat is dirty or impacted, the hair shafts cling together because of surface tension, natural sebum adhesion, and electrostatic charge. Warm water and surfactants reduce surface tension so the coat can open instead of staying clumped. Shampoo molecules then surround and lift away sebum, breaking the oily “glue” that causes matting and heaviness. Conditioner neutralizes electrical charge on the hair shaft, preventing re clumping and helping each strand align smoothly during drying. When these three forces are broken, the coat becomes airy, separated, and responsive ,which makes undercoat release easier, sc******ng cleaner, and fluff drying more predictable.

Think of a Shih Tzu that looks fluffy but feels greasy at the roots. That heaviness isn’t “dirty hair” it’s sebum adhesion and surface tension keeping the coat collapsed. Once shampoo lifts the oils and conditioner neutralizes charge, the coat finally opens and lifts during drying, giving you that clean, light, workable finish groomers aim for.

This is exactly why proper bathing and prep matter more than brushing alone. When you address the science behind the hair shaft, every step of the groom becomes easier and the final result becomes dramatically better.💕
