You're scrolling through fish for sale online and spot one you've wanted for years, maybe a red-bellied piranha or a freshwater stingray. The listing says it ships overnight, and before you check out, you want to know whether you can legally have it shipped to your house.

The answer depends mostly on where you live. Federal law bans a short list of species from import, but almost every rule that matters to a home aquarium is a state rule, and the lists differ a lot from one state to the next. A piranha that's legal in one state can get you a fine in the next one over.
