Another successful KismetK9 adventure is in the books!
John and Hazel had a wonderful trip to Doswell, VA, spending the week building confidence, practicing their skills in new environments, and making plenty of great memories along the way.

Now Hazel has officially been dropped off at her home, where she was reunited with her new sister, Daisy. After tons of training, planning, and cheering these girls on, it’s incredibly rewarding to see them take this next step together.

When the new Scooby-Doo series announced they had cast a “real Great Dane” as Scooby, a lot of people were excited.
As Great Dane enthusiasts, trainers, and advocates for responsible dog ownership, we had a very different reaction.
This is not about perfection, ribbons, or whether every pet dog looks like it stepped out of a breed magazine. It is about ethics.

The dogs we celebrate in mainstream media influence the choices people make. Families see a beloved character represented by a real dog and think, “I want one just like that.” That means the source of that dog matters.
Responsible breeders health test, prioritize temperament, and carefully select breeding pairs to reduce the risk of preventable diseases. They provide lifelong support to puppy buyers and take responsibility for every dog they produce.

Irresponsible breeding practices, on the other hand, contribute to the very issues trainers, veterinarians, rescue organizations, and owners work so hard to address- unstable temperaments, serious health problems, poor structure, and, in the worst cases, neglect and suffering.

This isn’t a conversation about whether a dog is “cute enough” or “show quality.” Every dog deserves love and care, regardless of where they came from.
It is, however, a conversation about the systems we choose to support.
If we’re going to use dogs as ambassadors for their breeds in movies, television, and advertising, let’s choose dogs whose stories reflect the very best of what responsible ownership and ethical breeding should look like. the dogs we put in the spotlight shape the future of their breeds and affect the daily life of breeders who give their passion and heart to the breeds they are passionate about.

Do your research, ask questions, support ethical breeders, and reputable rescues… And remember- loving dogs also means advocating for their welfare, even when those conversations are uncomfortable.

As trainers, we see the aftermath of poor breeding decisions every single day. Genetics matter. Early development matters. Ethical breeding matters. We owe it to the dogs to do better.

Field trip report: Finn takes on Alabama.

This weekend, Finn (aka Dave, depending on who you ask) packed his bags and hit the road with the Kismet crew. He handled it all like a seasoned traveler. New places, new environments, new routines, new smells, new people, new dogs… no problem!
A reminder: Finn is mostly blind and deaf. Everything he navigates, he does through trust, structure, and the skills he’s learned. this weekend he showed exactly what he’s capable of and we couldn’t be more proud. Settling in new spaces, moving through busy environments, and existing confidently despite being very confused about why the entire building we hung out in smelled like SO MANY OTHER DOGS.
He’s not fragile at all. He just needs someone willing to communicate in his language and follow through.
Finn is ready for his next step- his forever home! The right person is going to get a ridiculously fun, resilient, goofy little dog who’s already put in the work.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign, this is it.
