FELINE PANLEUKOPENIA (FPL), aka feline distemper or feline parvovirus is a highly contagious, potentially fatal disease of cats. Cats of any age can catch the virus, kittens, sick cats, and unvaccinated cats are most severely affected. Despite the names used to describe FPL, it is not to be confused with canine distemper or canine parvovirus infection, which are caused by different viruses.
Fortunately, excellent vaccines are available to help protect cats.
Kittens require vaccine boosters starting at 6 to 8 weeks of age and are boostered every three to four weeks until the kitten is 16 to 20 weeks of age and then are followed by at least one booster a year later. Cats and kittens over 16 weeks of age need an initial series of two vaccinations, three to four weeks apart.
