Dear Valued Clients and Pet Parents,
We’re writing to keep you informed and to work together to keep every dog healthy. We have reason to believe canine cough is circulating in the area. We have had three clients inform us their dogs are showing signs of canine cough (also known as kennel cough).
What is Canine Cough?
Canine cough, officially called canine infectious tracheobronchitis, is a contagious upper respiratory illness in dogs that spreads through the air, shared surfaces, or direct contact. According to the American Kennel Club and the American Veterinary Medical Association, it is often caused by a combination of organisms such as Bordetella bronchiseptica, canine parainfluenza virus, and canine adenovirus type-2. Common symptoms include a persistent dry “honking” cough, sneezing, nasal discharge, mild fever, and/or lethargy. While most healthy adult dogs recover within a week or two, puppies, seniors, and dogs with weaker immune systems can experience more serious illness, making early prevention and careful monitoring essential. Similar to a human cold, some dogs may have only mild symptoms, while others feel worse. If your pet shows more serious signs, such as pronounced lethargy or a drop in appetite, we recommend consulting your veterinarian.
What We’re Doing:
Health Checks & Vaccinations
- We continue to require Bordetella vaccinations every six months and will double check all records.
- At drop-off, we’ll ask whether your dog is coughing, sneezing, or has recently been exposed to a dog showing those symptoms.
Cleaning & Ventilation
- Kennels are disinfected before each new dog arrives and cleaned daily.
- Bedding is replaced as needed and laundered with bleach.
- We are equipped with hospital grade UV lights in our HVAC systems to kill germs.
Capacity Adjustments
- If a daycare dog shows signs of illness while in our care, we will send them home promptly and require that they stay home for 2 weeks.
- If a boarding dog shows signs of illness while in our care, we will follow our protocol to help minimize spread.
How You Can Help:
- Monitor and Communicate: Please watch for coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, or unusual tiredness and let us know right away.
- Delay Visits if Sick: If your dog is showing symptoms, please wait 2 weeks before returning for boarding or daycare.
- Keep Vaccines Current: Ensure your dog’s Bordetella vaccine is up to date.
Our goal is to keep every pup safe and happy while staying transparent about what’s happening. By maintaining health checks, vaccination requirements, essential cleaning, and by working together with you, we can help reduce the risk of illness. Eventually, this strain of canine cough will cycle out of the area.
Thank you for trusting us with your fur babies. If you have any questions or need to discuss upcoming reservations, please call or email us.
Warmly,
The Carolina Cat & Canine Team
