🐴 During the American Revolution, a small swamp horse from South Carolina could go where the British cavalry simply sank.

The Marsh Tacky descends from Spanish horses put ashore on the South Carolina coast from the sixteenth century onward. Over generations they became the everyday horse of the Lowcountry — kept in semi-feral bands out in the pine and marsh, gathered up when somebody needed one, and turned back out again afterward.

Small, sure-footed, unbothered by black water and soft ground. Which is exactly why Francis Marion's irregulars used them. The heavier British cavalry horses bogged down in the flooded swamp. The Tackies did not. A local horse, bred by the place itself, turned out to be a military advantage nobody could import.

Then mechanisation came and nearly finished them off, as it did so many working breeds. The Equus Survival Trust still lists the Marsh Tacky as critically endangered.

On 11 June 2010 South Carolina named it the official state heritage horse — recognition that arrived very late, but arrived.

A horse that helped win a revolution, and almost disappeared because of a tractor.

Had you heard of the Marsh Tacky before, or is this new to you?

Maid of the Silver Seas (Masie)!
Don’t sleep on this one, she is beyond special. Masie is a 6 yo Georgian Grande Mare who thrives on work. What is it that you would like to do with a horse? She just finished a full season of hunting with Whiskey Road Fox Hounds, going both first and second flight. A month after hunting, she’s confidently schooling dressage, mastering lateral movements and walk to canter. Want to event? Point this mare at a fence and she’ll jump it. Easy in the barn, clips without tranq, loads on anything and stands quietly tied to the trailer. Very safe-no big spook just an exceptional mind. She is charming as they come and will work for you no matter what you want to do. More videos coming.
