Blaming alfalfa for bad behavior is an equine tradition at this point... Next thing you know, it’ll be blamed for unlocked gate latches and escaped herds! 🐎💨

Let’s set the record straight: Alfalfa is a nutrient-dense feed, not a scapegoat for behavior.

Here’s what you actually need to know:

✨ “It makes horses hot.” → Research doesn't support this! Total dietary energy, turnout, and workload are what dictate energy levels.

✨ “It ruins kidneys.” → Healthy horses process excess protein without issue. Restrictions are only needed for existing kidney conditions.

✨ “It causes founder/laminitis.” → False. Metabolic status, insulin sensitivity, and overall diet drive laminitis risk, not alfalfa alone.

✨ “It’s bad for horses.” → False! It’s a clean, highly digestible forage packed with amino acids and calcium.

Does every horse need pure alfalfa? Not necessarily. But incorporated properly, it’s one of the best tools in your feeding strategy.
