Opal is in an ICU stall at Southern Equine Service; she is in the very best hands.

She did not respond to normal colic treatment and we were trying to take haul her to the clinic but couldn’t get her in the trailer. We took her to the paddock to see if she’d calm down. Welp she went down. So, we had our second emergency farm call of the day. There’s a limit to what you can do treatment wise in the field but we got some energy in her and then step by step (literally!). Dr. Cardona was picking each foot up and placing it forward while Flo Shmo pulled and John and I pushed. She was getting pain management, fluids and forehead skritches when we left.

What a crazy afternoon. I saw Mando behaving bizarrely on our security cameras and started for home. I had banamine on board (which he took like a champ) when Opal started going up and down and rolling. Ben and Poe are fine. Dr. Beetz is going to run some bloodwork to be on the safe side.

On the left is June ‘25 and on the right is now. The butt almost looks the same but last summer Ben was losing weight. He was burning all of his calories getting pushed around the paddock by Opal and Mando. He got some relief from that when Poe moved home and then John finished the barn. He’s steady this summer with a feed change and fly boots too.
