Teaching this girl some specific movements for her mom and some pressure therapy. (This video only shows one of her two pressure therapy positions.) She has been so fun to work and learns everything so incredibly fast. 🀍

I strongly believe all dogs need to learn how to handle pressure. It builds a solid, well rounded and mentally sound dog and gives you reliable communication and obedience skills. Dogs who don’t know how to work under some appropriate pressure fall apart when life gets tough or unconventional.

🐾 The Four Quadrants of Dog Training – Part 3 🐾

Negative Reinforcement: The Most Misunderstood Quadrant in Dog Training

Many people hear the term negative reinforcement and immediately think it means punishment.

It doesn’t.

In learning theory:

βœ… Negative = something is removed
βœ… Reinforcement = behaviour increases

In simple terms, the dog learns that performing a behaviour makes something unpleasant disappear.

Examples include:

β€’ Lead pressure released when the dog moves towards you.
β€’ Spatial pressure removed when the dog gives ground.
β€’ Low-level e-collar stimulation stopping when the dog performs a known behaviour.

The dog learns:

β€œIf I do this, that goes away.”

When applied fairly and with good timing, negative reinforcement can provide very clear information and build reliable behaviours.

The problem isn’t pressure.

The problem is poor timing, poor communication, and expecting dogs to solve problems they don’t understand.

Good trainers use pressure to create clarity.

Poor trainers use pressure to create fear.

There’s a huge difference.

🐾 Simon Says:
β€œPressure isn’t the problem. Confusion is. A dog that understands how to switch pressure off often learns faster than a dog that has no idea what the answer is supposed to be.”

Tomorrow: Part 4 – Positive Punishment and why it causes more arguments online than almost anything else in dog training.

Beginner class is designed to help you get a great start to a solid foundation of obedience with your dog. It’ll provide you with the tools and technique needed to teach the commands themselves. It will build true consistency in the commands where your dog will choose to listen to your given command the FIRST time you ask because they will have gained that knowledge and respect for you through your consistency in working them. It will teach your dogs to find better focus in working with you and listening to you through various distractions. It will also give you the tools needed to correct any naughty manners and bad habits. Through all of this, your dog will learn to be much more confident and much happier, because a trained dog will always be a happier dog in life than an untrained dog. Your bond with your dog will strengthen and you will open up a whole new form of communication between you and your dog that will benefit you both. It will require work, consistency and patience on your end. This isn’t simply luring with a treat, sounding like a broken record sometimes, nor crossing your fingers and wishing for the best in hard situations. It will truly give you all the basics anyone needs in having a well behaved dog and help you mold your dog into becoming their best self. The method works if you work it. If you follow through at home, practice and do the homework, it will truly pay off in the long run and make the rest of your time you spend with your four legged friend that much more enjoyable, for everyone.

And for anyone who does conformation, rally, or any other form of competitions, this will absolutely help you with your success in achieving any goal you have for your pup.

Once you have successfully completed beginner class, where your dog is consistent for you and you are confident in the basic handling, you can join an intermediate level class (when available) to even further your training.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with ANY questions you may have!
If you are interested in joining a class, please reach out to either sign up for an upcoming class or get put on a waitlist for a future class.

What is day training?

The day training program is where I come and train your dog daily and teach them their obedience skills with reliable consistency. This also includes working through any manners that need attention and attaining any other specific goals you have for your dog(s). I incorporate a lesson with you, the owner(s), each week to give you homework as they are learning so you can slowly, yet confidently, begin to learn how to maintain and continue the training at home. The day training program is designed where I come to you. This is the next best option to board and train, as training is done within your home setting. We can then set up follow up lessons as needed to ensure continual success.
