Our emergency team is here 24/7 this Labor Day Weekend for upset stomachs, unexpected injuries, mysterious snack choices, and everything else pets manage to surprise us with.

Pain isn't always obvious, and it doesn't always mean a pet will stop eating, playing, or acting like themselves altogether.

One thing that can help is knowing what's normal for your pet.

Maybe they always jump onto the couch without hesitation. Maybe they race you to the door before every walk. Maybe your cat has one particular spot they never miss.

When those everyday habits start changing, pay attention.

The sock wasn't supposed to be on the menu. Neither was the toy, corn cob, or mystery object from the floor.

When a pet swallows something they shouldn't, where that object ends up can determine what happens next.

In some cases, foreign material that's still accessible through the stomach or upper GI tract may be able to be removed using an endoscope — a small camera and specialized instruments passed through the mouth. Other cases may require surgery depending on the object's location, size, and the condition of the patient.

At WVC, having advanced diagnostics, endoscopy, and surgical capabilities under one roof helps our team determine the safest approach for each patient.

Heat Stroke Doesn't Always Happen During Exercise

Many people associate heat stroke with intense activity.

But pets can also overheat while riding in a car, spending time outside on warm evenings, or simply because temperatures remain elevated after sunset.

Heavy panting, weakness, vomiting, bright red gums, collapse, or confusion all require immediate veterinary attention.

If you suspect heat stroke, begin cooling your pet while heading to the nearest veterinarian right away.

Subtle changes like eating less, drinking more, hiding, sleeping differently, or skipping the litter box can sometimes be the earliest signs that something isn't right.

Sometimes a pet comes inside after playing a little harder than usual with a slight limp. Sometimes it improves after a day or two.

Other times, persistent limping can be a sign of ligament injuries, fractures, arthritis, or other orthopedic conditions that deserve veterinary evaluation.

If your pet has been limping for more than a day or two, refuses to bear weight, or seems increasingly uncomfortable, it's worth having them examined.

Early diagnosis often helps guide the best treatment plan and can improve long-term comfort.
