Nine years ago at the Dublin Horse Show, we raised a glass to Afton Stables. Now, almost a decade later, we have built a very special place in the horse world. We are grateful for every year that we’ve had together and we have so much more to look forward to 🥂 👱‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️🐴🐴🦄🦄🐕🦮🐕‍🦺 - oh, and we haven’t aged a day!!! 😆

⛰️The grass in Virginia is thriving this summer🌱☘️! Thanks to regular afternoon thunderstorms since late July our fields are looking much more lush than they did in June. While the horses think this is great, the never-ending snack bar has been hard on their waistlines… this means some of them need to wear a grazing muzzle to reduce their intake. [if you’re thinking, “I wish somebody would muzzle me to reduce my intake” you’re not alone].

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, but managing livestock in the era of climate change is challenging on a new level. In the Piedmont region of Virginia, we have incredibly lush grass in the spring and in the fall. Usually it is dry and dead in the summer and wet and dead in the winter. This means our horses’ dietary needs change seasonally, and we have to be vigilant about not letting them become either too fat or too thin. Thankfully our vet and nutrition team Tiffany McLane Snell and BLUE RIDGE FARMERS COOP are experts in weight management!

🌤️It was a beautiful late-summer afternoon at Afton Stables ⛰️🌸. The weather and the light were dramatic, but thankfully that’s all the drama we have around here! We are sooooo grateful for the afternoon showers that have been helping to ameliorate the drought.

Yunque is doing well after his third (and final) castration to remove scar tissue adhesions. He is learning to move more freely, and using his body in new ways. This means he needs lots of gentle movement so he can build back fitness correctly. We are so excited to watch him develop into his happiest self, finally free from pain!
He has always had an amazing work ethic, and now he can learn to love dressage.

With weather like this, you have to ride out! Hill day for Forest and Flavia. What a beautiful pair!

The Virginia Equestrian Commonwealth Games put on a well-run and super fun inaugural show! 🐴🦄
The ladies of Afton Stables had a great time competing in Dressage, Show Jumping, and even a hunter class. 💝 It was a super friendly atmosphere, with curiosity and camaraderie between disciplines.
In the words of AftonStables Angela Doolan “This is my favorite show ever!!!”
According to Anesia “This show gives me hope for the future of horse sports.”

We hope attendance grows even more next year, and we will definitely be there! Thanks GC Equestrian for bringing this vision to life!
