🚨 AIR QUALITY ALERT FOR MONROE & SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN 🚨
Canadian wildfire smoke has moved into our area, creating hazardous air quality. While many of us may notice irritated eyes, coughing, or a sore throat, our pets can also be affected—especially those that are young, elderly, or have heart or respiratory conditions.
🐶 For Dog Owners:
• Keep walks short and only go outside for quick potty breaks.
• Avoid running, hiking, fetch, or other strenuous exercise until air quality improves.
• Watch for coughing, wheezing, difficulty breathing, excessive panting, watery eyes, or unusual tiredness.
• Make sure fresh water is always available.
🐱 For Cat Owners:
• Keep cats indoors if at all possible.
• Close windows and doors to help reduce smoke entering your home.
• If your cat has asthma or another respiratory condition, monitor them closely for coughing, open-mouth breathing, or increased breathing effort.
🏠 Help Keep Indoor Air Cleaner:
• Keep windows closed.
• Run your air conditioning on recirculate if possible.
• If you have an air purifier with a HEPA filter, this is a great time to use it.
🚑 Seek veterinary care immediately if your pet is struggling to breathe, has blue or pale gums, collapses, or seems to be in distress.
Our pets depend on us to protect them from dangers they can’t understand. A day or two of staying inside and taking it easy is a small price to pay for keeping them healthy.
