I recently returned from rural southern Mexico, where I participated in the Equine Welfare in Practice program through the MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. This was my fifth time serving as a mentor veterinarian, and it continues to be one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
The program focuses on providing care for working equids—horses, mules, and donkeys that are essential to the daily lives and livelihoods of the people who depend on them. Improving their comfort, soundness, and overall welfare makes a real difference for both the animals and the communities they serve. This past week, we served 430 equids by doing surgery, dentistry, & vaccines, as well as lameness and therapeutic trimming. Working alongside veterinary students in these settings is also an important part of the experience.
Thank you to my clients for your patience while I was away.
