This beautiful little girl has one indifferent personality. It takes her a few minutes to start coming around . I'm certain in the right home she will be won over and a great companion pet. She would do better with an owner that knows hedgehogs and a better fit for an adult owner.

I'm not certain why some hedgehogs are more "desirable" than others. They are ALL beautiful to me. Each one so unique in looks and personalities. I understand everyone has their vision of their "ideal" hedgehog, but to me they are all "ideal" in their own way.

These cuties are still looking for their quillever homes. If interested DM me.

Happy World Veterinary Day! 🌍🩺

Today, we celebrate the veterinarians, veterinary technicians, nurses, students, receptionists, educators, researchers, and support teams who dedicate their work to improving animal health and welfare.

At AEMV, we are especially grateful for the professionals who advocate for exotic companion mammals — species that are often misunderstood, underserved, and in need of knowledgeable, compassionate care.

Thank you to every veterinary professional working to advance exotic mammal medicine, support pet owners, mentor the next generation, and improve the lives of rabbits, ferrets, guinea pigs, rodents, hedgehogs, sugar gliders, and other small mammals around the world.

Happy from AEMV! đź’™

If you have taken your hedgehog to the vet in the last year please comment below with the Veterinary Office and Name of your Veterinarian. Offices Located in Illinois, Iowa, Indiana, and Wisconsin are helpful.

Some of the Veterinary Offices on the past list are no longer seeing exotics.

Thank you all for your assistance in helping to provide much needed information to our owners.

These are European hedgehogs and they are threatened. The residents have been asked to help conservationists save this threatened species. Remember their diet is different than the African Pygmy which is most of what is kept in the US

All hedgehogs are “lovely things”. ❤️❤️❤️

PSA : New information on Wood Habitats

It has always been required that wood products be sealed with a waterproof sealant to make your habitat “hedgehog safe” to prevent bacterial growth from f***s and urine seeping into the wood, or to prevent your hedgehog to be exposed to toxic oils that made be exuding from soft woods.

We have a new danger identified in the cheaper wooden cabinets that are being mass marketed. The specifics of these habitats only states that it is made of wood. The wood being used is not solid wood (which would still require a waterproof sealant) but from pressed wood (fiberboard or MDF)

The process to make this type of “wood” requires a resin, the resin may contain formaldehyde because it's used in most of the adhesives (resins) that bind the wood particles together, acting as a glue.
Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, so concerns exist, especially with older or poorly ventilated products. These resins can slowly release formaldehyde gas over time, a process known as "off-gassing," which is more noticeable in new products or confined spaces. Exposure can cause respiratory issues and allergic reactions, and is linked to certain cancers.

Alternative solutions include:
• Low-emission products: Look for particle board labeled as "no added formaldehyde" (NAF) or using low-emission (ULEF) resins.
• Sealants: Applying a sealant or low-VOC primer to cut edges can help lock in fumes.
• Solid wood: Solid wood products don't require these synthetic binders and are a preferred alternative for many.

Here are a few types of habitats that give the “furniture” appearance and are safe for your hedgehog:
• Oiibo reptile habitats (Glass/Acrylic/PVC/Plastic) found at Chewy and Wayfair
• Dubia.com Reptile habitats (PVC/Acrylic)
• Exotic Nutrition habitat (PVC/ Acrylic)

Sometimes the best laid plans don’t work out as you expected. This beautiful girl, Shelomi, had her first litter four little ones. I want to check on her and she had one of them have destroyed in half eaten in her mouth.

As a breeder, you need to make a decision do you leave the babies with mom in hopes that she doesn’t think that they are all snacks and within 24 hours begins to properly care for them? Or do you pull the babies that are remaining and place some with another mom to foster? That can also be a risk if the foster mom does not accept the babies not only can she kill all of the babies you put in there, but she could destroy her own litter.

Espinete had babies a day or two before Shelomi. Epinete has been a mom before and a very good one and has even fostered. So I took the chance. I moved three babies into the nest where Espinete already had three babies.

By that evening, we went from six babies to five… sparing you all of the details. We are now at three babies, and they are all doing well ironically only one of Espinetes remains the other two belong to Shelomi

Two other pairings did not produce a pregnancy… so now I am behind in my breeding program. I will not over breed my girls. I will try to catch up with the next pairings.

This girl is so beautiful and I am so disappointed in her as a first time mom. Maybe the second time will go better.
