Barb C. has been a member of Shaggy Pines Dog Park for over 21 years. She joined after she was married because between her and her husband they had three dogs - two Huskies and one Lab. Walking them was total chaos. She also felt that walking them wasn’t enough exercise for them - she wanted a safe place for them to run.

Barb had heard of Shaggy Pines and especially liked the vaccination requirement and the temperament testing for potential dog members. Top of the list for Barb was safety of her pups. She told her husband she was going to try it for a month to see what it was like and also just to see if their dogs even liked it. They made two morning visits in a row before she went to Shaggy’s office and signed up for the year membership.

Her current Labs are Lillie and Hayley. Lillie (magenta collar) is 6 years old and Hayley is 4 - both are high-energy Labs, and they have been members since they were puppies. Barb brings them every morning to run and it is common to see them in the front field playing and chasing balls with the 4 or 5 other black Labs that make up Shaggy's Black Lab Club - an informal meetup of black Labs that happens most mornings.

Barb was first intrigued by Shaggy’s because it was a safe environment for her dogs to play, but after joining, she realized it was way more than just a dog park. It was a community. Not only does she know that if something were to happen to her or one of her dogs while in the park, other members would be right there to help. But beyond that? When Hayley was just 6 months old, Barb was out of commission due to an injury and couldn’t exercise her dogs. Two Shaggy members came out to her house and exercised both Hayley and Lillie in her backyard, so she could have the peace she needed to relax and heal - without a 6-month-old Lab puppy going crazy because of no exercise. That is community.

Barb’s favorite thing about Shaggy’s? How happy her dogs are at the park. So happy she needs to wear earplugs. As soon as she turns onto 36th, they both let loose with nonstop crying. By the time she turns into Shaggy’s drive it is continual earsplitting barking. In other words, a lot of Lab happy.

~ New Member Highlight ~

Meet Suzie, a 7-month-old beagle who just became a Shaggy member last month. Suzie might be a new member, but her humans are not. They have been members for 17 years with two other beagles. Before Suzie, they had Madeline. Madeline came to Shaggy every day - to run, play and to greet all her human (her favorite humans were the ones with treats) and dog friends. Madeline died last October when she was 14 years old.

Our dogs are such a huge part of our daily lives and when they are suddenly gone it leaves such overwhelming and suffocating voids. The daily Shaggy visit wasn’t just about getting Madeline exercise and stimulation - it was also exercise for her Mom and Dad, as well as visiting with all of the friends they have made over the years as human members. So many human friendships have been made at Shaggy just hanging out, watching our pups play, talking about whatever - laughing at our dog’s antics and just relaxing. Shaggy has a very strong sense of community - Shaggy is family.

After Madeline passed, her Dad continued to walk at Shaggy every day (this is actually not uncommon after a dog passes), but her Mom just wasn’t up to it. Shaggy just held too many memories of Madeline, and it was too much for her. Several months went by and Madeline’s Mom still wasn’t walking at Shaggy with her husband.

One of the PT employees at Shaggy Pines, Whitney, noticed Madeline’s Mom still hadn’t visited the park since Madeline passed and sent her an email asking her if she was available to help her out because she was too busy working and her dog really needed the exercise - would she be willing to walk through Shaggy with her dog, Luca, while she worked?

Madeline’s Mom said ‘yes’, she would help. Because family helps family, right? That request for help was the little step and gentle push Madeline’s Mom needed to get back to the park. Several months later, they got 7-week-old Suzie and when she turned 6 months old, she became a member as well and is running, playing and making her dog and human friends every day with her Mom and Dad.

Welcome to the Shaggy family, Suzie - we are so happy to have you here!! ❤️

This is Wrigley! Wrigley is an 11-year-old yellow Lab and he's been a member at Shaggy’s for 2 years.

Wrigley’s humans brought him home when he was 8 weeks old and he has been at the heart of all of their adventures ever since. He loves visiting dog-friendly restaurants and breweries, exploring new places and going on walks with his Mom and Dad (he proudly carries his own leash when out and about). He enjoys being outdoors, but he doesn’t care much for hot weather - thus, earning the nickname Polar Bear. He is always up for a car ride, a pup cup from Starbucks drive through or a swim. His favorite treats are bully sticks, freeze-dried treats, meat and cheese.

As he has gotten older, Wrigley has developed a few lovable quirks. Every night, he enjoys his "second dinner" before bed so he can take his medication, and once he's finished, he heads halfway up the stairs and sits down, patiently waiting for his humans to follow him to bed. Routine is the name of the game with Wrigley.

As an 11 year old, Wrigley is slowing down. Especially as he battles arthritis and cancer, but his joyful spirit hasn’t changed at all. He greats every person and dog he meets like they are old friends. He is a Lab through and through – loveable, always happy and incredibly loyal and very attached to his humans. ❤️

Friday was Wrigley’s last visit to Shaggy’s. He is moving with his Mom and Dad to California. It was bittersweet for Shaggy’s to say goodbye to Wrigley, but also for his Mom and Dad, because they know just how much Wrigley loves Shaggy Pines. We wish Wrigley and his Mom and Dad the absolute best!
