I’ve had multiple people reach out asking if I have a registry or gift list for our lesson horses, and honestly, I never even thought about it! 😂

So, I put one together! 🥰 Of course, please don’t feel obligated to purchase anything, but we truly appreciate anything anyone chooses to get for our lesson horses. They are very spoiled and very loved! ☺️🐴

I don’t think the horses realize just how good they have it… 😂

We wake up extra early to knock chores out so we can ride before it gets too hot, then they get a bubble bath and stand on mats in front of a fan. Pretty spoiled, if you ask me! 🫧🐴

All of the SPH horses get a lunge day every week to give them a chance to stretch, move, and use their bodies a little more freely.

Sometimes that means working over poles, sometimes it’s going up and down hills, sometimes it’s a casual jog, and sometimes it’s literally just walking. 😂

If they’re feeling a little spunky or spicy, they’re allowed to act accordingly on the lunge without being reprimanded for it. A little buck, squeal, or extra energy isn’t the end of the world. They’re horses, not machines.

I think it’s important for horses to have an “easy” bodywork day built into their schedule. It gives their bodies a break from the usual work while still allowing them to move, stretch, and stay active.

It also gives them a chance to think for themselves and figure out how they want to use their body and brain without me constantly telling them what to do.

I truly feel like giving horses that freedom helps keep them fresh minded, engaged, and happy in their work rather than feeling like they’re just going through the motions.

At the end of the day, they’re horses first. ❤️

One of my favorite things that shocks our lesson students and parents is finding out that our lesson horse, Isaac, is 24 years old! 🥹

So what’s the secret to keeping him looking and feeling so great at his age? Conditioning, turnout, and quality nutrition.

One thing I truly believe makes a huge difference with aging horses is that a body in motion stays in motion. One of the worst things you can do for an older horse is simply let them sit.

Now, that doesn’t mean I work the snot out of Isaac on his non-lesson days. 😂 I’m very intentional about how much work he does each week and making sure he gets plenty of recovery time.

He typically works 3–4 days a week and gets 3–4 days off, with 24/7 turnout. His workload is enough to keep him fit, strong, and comfortable without overdoing it.

At 24, he still has a job to do and he’s pretty damn good at it. 🖤

I spent the majority of my teen years learning and working for a handful of dressage trainers throughout West Michigan. I had the opportunity to ride some incredibly talented horses and learn some really cool things along the way.

I wanted to spend every possible hour at the barn learning, working, riding, and soaking up as much knowledge as I could. Because of that, I’ve taken so many of the training tools I learned through dressage and applied them to all kinds of horses and disciplines.

I truly believe every horse should have some form of dressage within their education. Dressage isn’t just about executing a pattern in front of a judge. It’s about developing accuracy, control, balance, communication, and precision in both directions.

Those tools can benefit just about any horse, no matter what their “job” is. And honestly, that’s one of my favorite parts of having a background in so many different disciplines, taking the pieces that work and creating a more well-rounded horse.

All the speed people look at me loping around on the pleasure horses and don’t think I know ball… trust me. I KNOW BALL 😆

Kodak is getting less bitter about work everyday! Sometimes it takes a minute to realize it’s less work to just behave and listen than try to get out of work and in return get more work 😆
