☀️ Summer temperatures are here! ☀️

Every year, we see pets suffer from heat exhaustion and heat stroke—sometimes from being left in vehicles, and sometimes simply from spending too much time outdoors in temperatures their bodies can't handle.

As the weather heats up, keep a close eye on your pets and make sure they have access to shade, fresh water, and a cool place to rest. 🐾

Brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds, such as Bulldogs, Pugs, Boston Terriers, and Shih Tzus, are especially vulnerable to overheating and should be monitored carefully during hot weather.

If your pet is excessively panting, lethargic, drooling, vomiting, or struggling to breathe, seek veterinary care immediately.

Stay safe and stay cool this summer! ❤️

🐾WIGGLES WEDNESDAY!🐾

Wiggles wants to say thank you to everyone who has purchased candles or donated to our Adopt-a-Pet Fund. We’ve been able to make a real difference for animals in need.

Your support has helped us:

-Provide spay/neuter services for stray animals.
-Transfer pets to rescue organizations and shelters that can place them in loving homes.
-Cover additional diagnostics, medications, and surgeries for injured animals who need extra care.

Every candle purchased and every donation helps another pet get the chance they deserve. Thank you for supporting all the animals who depend on our community’s kindness. ❤️

☀️🐾 Hot pavement can burn paws!

Before heading out for a walk, place the back of your hand on the pavement for a few seconds. If it's too hot for your hand, it's too hot for your pet's feet.

Early mornings are a great time to get outside before the ground heats up. Your pet's paws will thank you! ❤️

⭐PATIENT OF THE WEEK!⭐

Meet Chip! 🍪🐾

This handsome pup got his name from his beautiful merle coat, which makes him look just like a delicious chocolate chip cookie! 🍫

Chip's fur is unbelievably soft and silky, and at only 20 weeks old, he's already figured out one very important life lesson: treats are worth working for! 😆🍖

With good looks, a soft coat, and a love for snacks, it's safe to say Chip has already won us over. ❤️

🐾 FEEL GOOD FRIDAY! 🐾

Just over two months ago, Ace's world changed overnight.

He suddenly became paralyzed, and within 24 hours he had lost the ability to move all four limbs. He was diagnosed with idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, an immune-mediated condition that causes inflammation of the nerves.

What followed was a long and challenging road to recovery—not just for Ace, but for his family.

For more than two months, his owners provided around-the-clock care. They cleaned him up when he couldn't help himself, managed multiple urinary tract infections, helped with bladder care, and kept his spirits up when he couldn't do the things he loved. When Ace was finally able to hold himself up on his chest again, they played fetch with him from the floor. They found ways to keep him entertained and engaged so he wouldn't lose hope.

And here's something our veterinary team can truly appreciate: despite months of being unable to control his urination, Ace never developed urine scalding. That's a testament to the incredible care and dedication his family provided every single day.

Today, Ace is walking again.

In fact, if you met him now, you would never know what he and his family have been through. The photos show his journey from the day he was diagnosed to this week, and seeing him up and moving again is nothing short of amazing.

Recoveries like this don't happen without an incredible support system. Ace's family never gave up on him, and now they finally have their dog back.

Congratulations, Ace—we couldn't be happier for you and your family. ❤️🐾

We are excited this dog park is still available for our local friends! 😃

The Grand Re-Opening of the Ted & Mid Viola Dog Park was held Wednesday, June 10, at its new location in Eisenhower Park, just north of the tennis courts. The event provided an opportunity to officially reintroduce this popular community amenity and help residents become familiar with its new home.
The new location offers increased shade, improved accessibility, and a better overall experience for both dogs and their owners. The park also features two benches and a drinking fountain generously donated by Abilene Animal Hospital.
The Abilene Parks & Recreation Department would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the Ted & Mid Viola Family for their continued support and generosity. The original dog park was located on land that belonged to Ted and Mid Viola and was later donated to the City of Abilene by Linda Viola Bankes and Sally Viola Cullor. The dog park was also a project of the Dickinson County Leadership Class led by Angie Wilkins, Cynthia Deters, and Cody Schlesener. Their commitment and dedication have helped make the dog park possible, and it continues to benefit the community today.
Residents are able to support the Dog Park Fund established through the Community Foundation. Donations to the fund will help provide additional amenities, future improvements, and ongoing maintenance of the park.
The Abilene Parks & Recreation Department thanks everyone for their support and hopes community members and their four-legged friends enjoy the new space for years to come.
