Albert is here to tell you that today is National Alligator Day! 💚

The American alligator plays an important role in the ecosystems southeastern United States. They're well known for their long lifespans and the ability to grow over 14 feet. Albert is the only animal at Abilene Zoo who has been here since the zoo's opening in 1966!

Stop by this weekend to wish our favorite American alligator a happy National Alligator Day.

The moment you have been waiting for has arrived! The two newest members of the giraffe heard have been named. Each of them have been named by a donor from our Zoobilation event.

Picture 1: Pele's boy, Kékere (pronounced KEH-keh-reh) means "small" or "little" in Yoruba, an African language. At his birth, Kékere weighed in and measured in under average for a giraffe calf, giving

Picture 2: Jamie's girl, Lue (pronounced Lou). This is a family name of the donor.

Ask a staff member to help you spot the difference of the two during your next visit!

Today Abilene Zoo is celebrating World Whooping Crane Day! These North American birds are one of the most endangered species at Abilene Zoo and our participation in the Species Survival Plan is an important conservation effort happening right here in Abilene.

Oobleck and Crocket are our female and male Whooping Cranes. Which them a happy World Whooping Crane day in the comments!

If you've wondered why the fosa have not been out these past few days, we have a huge surprise!

On May 22, Lavavolo welcomed three healthy pups: two males and one female. This marks her second successful litter, after welcoming the same combination of pups in 2023. Dad Hazo arrived earlier this year as part of a recommendation through the AZA’s Species Survival Plan.

Fosas are the main predator of the island of Madagascar, and births like these are incredibly important. There are currently only 35 fosas in 19 AZA-accredited facilities, and only five fosa births have occurred in the last 12 months, three of them from the Abilene Zoo!

These births are a major milestone in the zoo’s ongoing conservation efforts and continue to position Abilene Zoo as one of the leading facilities for successful fosa breeding and care.

For now, the pups will remain behind the scenes as they grow and bond with mom. Stay tuned for updates and the announcement of their name!

If you've been waiting for more information on our latest giraffe, wait no longer! Abilene Zoo was blessed with a sweet baby girl giraffe on Sunday, May 17th, born to Jamie and Congo. This is Jamie's 5th baby, so it is safe to say she is an experienced mama. The baby girl weighed in today at 163 lbs and 6 feet, 2 inches tall. 🦒

Within minutes, this energetic calf was on her feet and zipping around. She arrived just two weeks after Pele gave birth to a boy. While they are not twins, they are already getting to know each other and playing around (when mom lets them, of course 😉). Both babies' names are still in the works, so stay tuned for the name announcement.

Be sure to look for these two darling babies during your next visit and leave a welcoming comment below!
