Researchers studying captive leopard geckos found that environments with more complexity — including varied surfaces, hiding options, and choice — helped the animals display more natural behaviors and improved overall welfare. Geckos in enriched setups were more active and showed signs of better wellbeing than those in simpler enclosures.

Scientists found a half male-half female spider unlike any known to science.

Scientists in Thailand have discovered a striking new species of "wishbone" spider, including a rare specimen that is perfectly split between male and female characteristics.

The discovery occurred in the forests of Kanchanaburi, near the Myanmar border, where local residents unearthed a burrowing spider unlike any known to science.

Named Damarchus inazuma after a sex-shifting character from the manga "One Piece," the species belongs to the wishbone spider group, known for building silk-lined, Y-shaped retreats. While the species itself is a significant find for biodiversity, one particular individual captured international attention: a bilateral gynandromorph. This rare biological phenomenon resulted in a spider split exactly down the middle, displaying the pale white coloration of a male on its right side and the vibrant orange hues of a female on its left.

Researchers from Chulalongkorn University note that this is the first time such a "half-and-half" individual has been recorded in the Bemmeridae family. Beyond its unique appearance, Damarchus inazuma is a formidable predator. Though formal venom studies are pending, scientists observed the spiders exhibiting aggressive displays and producing droplets at the tips of their fangs, suggesting they are well-equipped for ambushing prey. The discovery highlights how much remains hidden within Thailand’s ecosystems, where even a chance social media post by a local enthusiast can lead to a breakthrough that challenges our understanding of arachnid biology and genetics.
