🌿Let’s Start From One for Our Little World 🌿

🌿 We talk a lot about the environment, good communities, a better society, and a better country. But we may forget that all these big things begin with something very small — taking care of ourselves.

🌿 If we take good care of our bodies — choosing what we eat, what we use, and what we grow, while trying to reduce the use of chemicals — we’re not only taking care of our own health. We’re also reducing what ends up in the soil, in the water, and eventually back in our communities.

🌿 And if we take good care of our minds — knowing what is enough, learning to share, and choosing not to take advantage of others — that doesn’t stop with us either.

It reaches the people in our home.
From our home, it reaches our neighbours.
From neighbours, a community grows.
And many small communities together eventually become a country.

🌿 I still believe that most people don’t really want to be bad people. No one wakes up in the morning wanting to go out and take advantage of someone else.

If people have enough to eat, a reasonable sense of security, love, care, and a good environment to grow up in, there is a greater chance that they will pass something good on to others.

So when someone tells me that this way of thinking is “too idealistic,” I don’t really take it as criticism.

What’s wrong with wanting a beautiful world? 🌿

At least we need to have a picture of the kind of world we want to live in before we can begin creating it.

We don’t have to start by changing the world.
We don’t have to start by changing the country.
And we don’t have to wait for the government, the community, or anyone else to change first.

Take good care of your body.
Take good care of your mind.
Take good care of your family.

And if you have a little more to give, take care of one more person around you.

That alone is already a start. That is counting one.

Because in the end, everything we hope to see in this world has to begin with someone.

And that someone could be us.

It really is that simple.

The hardest part is that we keep waiting for someone else to begin — and no one wants to be the one who starts counting from themselves. 🌿

(Agroforestry) 🌿
🌿 Agroforestry 🌿
When forest, food, and life share the same land

In the simplest terms, agroforestry means farming without separating ourselves from the forest.

Instead of seeing a piece of land as having to be either “forest” or “farmland,” agroforestry brings the two back together. We grow large trees, useful timber trees, fruit trees, food crops, medicinal plants, and native species at different levels, allowing them to support one another much like the structure of a natural forest.

Large trees provide shade.
Roots hold the soil and retain moisture.
Fallen leaves become organic matter.
Lower-growing plants protect and cover the soil.
Insects, birds, and small animals gradually return.

At the same time, people can still gather food and medicinal plants, use timber, and earn a living from the land.

What I find especially interesting is that when we look back at the traditional way of life in Northern Thailand, we may realize that agroforestry is not really a new idea at all.

Backyard gardens, old longan orchards, wooded areas along the edges of rice fields, irrigation canals, streams, and the land surrounding villages were rarely home to just one kind of tree.

🌿 There were trees we could eat from.
🌿 Trees used as medicine.
🌿 Trees for building houses and making tools.
🌿 Trees that provided shade.
🌿 Trees whose fruits were simply left for birds and other animals.

And there were also trees that nobody thought of cutting down simply because they had been standing there since the time of our grandparents and great-grandparents.

A piece of land, then, did much more than simply “produce.”

It was a kitchen, a medicine cabinet, a source of timber, a place of shade, a water source, a habitat for wildlife, and at the same time, a keeper of the community’s memories.

This is part of what has made me increasingly interested in native trees.

Once we begin to know the names of trees, we begin to see their relationships with the land. And when we listen to their names in Kam Mueang, the language of Northern Thailand, we discover that knowledge of the forest does not exist only in textbooks.

It is hidden in language, village names, food, herbal medicine, woodcraft, and the stories people have carried with them.

🌿 For me, agroforestry is therefore much more than a technique of growing many kinds of trees on the same piece of land.

It brings us back to a simple question:

How can we make use of a piece of land while still leaving life there for the generations that come after us?

🌿 Not every square metre needs to generate the highest possible income.
🌿 We do not need to remove every existing tree in order to begin again.
🌿 And we do not need to control every part of nature until it looks neat and orderly according to our expectations.

Some corners can be left a little wild.
Some trees may give us nothing directly.
In some seasons, fallen leaves may cover the ground.

But all of these things are doing their own work.

A healthy forest is never made up of just one kind of tree.

And perhaps a sustainable life should not depend on just one kind of harvest either.

Maybe agroforestry is not really about humans trying to “create a forest.”

Perhaps it is simply about learning how to live within the forest again — without requiring the forest to disappear in order for us to live.

And for me, that may be the simplest meaning of agroforestry. 🌿

“The King is the water, and I shall be the forest—the forest that stays loyal to the water. When the King builds a reservoir, I will grow the forest.”

Given to the people of Tham Tio Village, Song Dao District, Sakon Nakhon Province, on December 20, 1982."
These words have deeply taken root in our hearts, inspired by the royal wisdom of
Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, who taught us to love the forest and cherish nature’s true value since childhood.
This is the path we have always followed—and will continue to walk.
We will be a small patch of forest that connects people,
encouraging them to plant and protect the Mother’s forests.
With boundless gratitude for Her Majesty’s grace and love,
we humbly bid farewell to the Queen Mother. 🌿💙

Organic Gardening Day! 🌾
