Punk Mutts - Another kind of dog training Force-free does NOT mean that our dog’s life is coated in sugar so he/she will not be able to cope with stress.

I have decided to open this page to share how force-free training works as it is not a common practice in our big city and growing dog community. Rather than relying on control and forced compliance, force-free training is based on understanding the motivation behind dog behaviour to work at the causes -and not the symptoms- of dog management problems. It means we are able to understand the causes of distress in the dog, address them, and effectively communicate a successful course of action. It means we are giving the dog the tools to face stress. It means enabling your dog to build up life-skills and problem-solving, not just execute orders. In the end, it is all about building trust and confidence in the relationship between human and dog, and about communicating and understanding each other. To do this, I focus on the observation and analysis of dogs’ behavior, sharing how to effectively read your dog, manage his/her emotional state, and communicate accordingly. On behaviourism: I do use positive reinforcement, especially in learning, but it’s not all about it. I recognise its important shortcomings for social and emotional challenges and promote an approach based on communication and relationship to better address these issues.

Full breakdown of what we did when Eskel got charged by a rival - and it’s a long one, so grab a tea 😅

This was part of the “In the reaction” webinar, showed to understand where some reactivity patterns come from and why dogs showcase them, in situations where they are actually functional.

I’ve been wanting this harness for months. Eskel’s previous harness also was a great fit but the .shop harness is even lighter.

The alternative to flooding or creating shut down cannot just be distraction or avoidance. There are humane, gentle solutions that go in the direction of emotional wellbeing - if we just stop managing and we focus more on what the dog needs from us as companions they can go through experiences together.

I almost stopped Eskel, until I realised what was happening.

Eskel and Betty have been knowing each other for almost 5 years. I have a massive soft spot for Betty (she’s my absolute favourite from the beach) but I also know she can be intolerant of other females. So, as she approaches, I step next to the black female to shelter her… but Eskel anticipates my intentions and prevents Betty from accessing this section of the beach in the first place.

Until a moment before the video, Eskel and Betty were walking along the beach, patrolling together. And right after the video, they went back at it.

Can you see this dynamic?

A little podcast to say, remember that our dogs assume we are going to help them when they struggle.

There is nothing wrong with active submission, as long as the puppy doesn’t feel like they have to use it to mediate the whole interaction. The problem does not lay in the behaviour but in the context we put the puppy in.

Puppy strategies are all about looking small and harmless and friendly…but this often masks an underlying discomfort. Once the dog grows up and acquires a louder voice, the response to discomfort might switch towards reactivity or aggression. So let’s stop mistaking high arousal for friendliness and appeasement for happiness.

It’s very normal for male dogs struggling when a female goes into heat… but did you know that that’s actually not how it’s meant to be?

Hormonal fluctuations are normal for any mammal and the free roaming dogs are a great example of how they can manage this part of their social life. However, the situation gets a bit more complicated when we add humans into the mix and bring dogs into our homes.

Is absence of behaviour better than “unwanted behaviour”? What is the cost of fixing a dog “at all costs”? Is “safety first” really the safest option?
