——> We call it ‘Gut Check’

Because there can be a time lapse between eating and p**ping, we don’t just look at whether a bunny is eating or producing p**p.

At My Happy Tales, we incorporate our unique Gut Check technique to assess how the gut is moving and pick up potential issues earlier. 🐰

Last night, we got a call from one of our clients. 🐰

Their bunny has an existing dental issue and seemed to have something stuck in his mouth. He kept chewing non-stop and looked uncomfortable. As the vets were already closed, we took a quick look.

And woolaalaaa… 🍐😂

Caught the pear!

A small piece of pear was lodged in his mouth. Once removed, he was much more comfortable.

Sometimes it’s the little things that can cause a lot of discomfort. If your bunny is repeatedly chewing, pawing at the mouth, or acting uncomfortable, it’s always worth getting it checked.

P.S. Our after-hours assistance is only available for My Happy Tales’ clients who have boarded or used our services within the last 1 year, and is subject to availability. We’re not a vet clinic, but we’ll do our best to help when we can and advise on the next steps. 🐰❤️

If u trust us a little more, sometime we can do a lot more for u and your pet ❤️

Most owners think that medical recovery with us is all about routine medication, critical care feeding, and following the vet’s instructions. While these are important, recovery is often much more than that. It involves continuous monitoring, reassessment, and spotting subtle changes before they become bigger problems.

We received a call for help awhile back. A bunny had just undergone dental surgery and unfortunately wasn’t doing well. The owner had already arranged for recovery care with us, but things took a turn for the worse.

His temperature was low, he wasn’t eating, and he was extremely lethargic.

Imagine planning ahead for such a major surgery, doing everything right, only to see your bunny struggling after discharge. It was a very stressful and critical period for everyone involved.

As we assessed him, we realised something wasn’t right. We managed to identify that he was unable to p*e, causing his bladder to become extremely full and distended.

We quickly stepped in, addressed the issue, and started stabilising him while keeping a close watch on his condition.

Thankfully, he gradually turned the corner. His appetite improved, his energy came back, and today he’s doing well and enjoying life again. 🐰❤️

Recovery is never just about medication. Sometimes it’s about spotting the small changes, identifying the underlying issue early, and acting before things deteriorate further.

P.S. We are not vets. We simply try our best to help every bunny and client that comes through our doors.

For critical cases, we still rely heavily on the vets for diagnosis, treatment, and hospitalisation when needed. Our role is to provide recovery support, close monitoring, and work together with the veterinary team to help each bunny recover better. ❤️

Part 2: Cleo’s Recovery Journey 🐰

By working closely with the vet and monitoring her recovery daily, Cleo was finally able to go home after 20 days of recovery care.

20 days sounds long or short?

For us, it’s actually a VERY GOOD and relatively FAST recovery. Cleo went home at about 95% recovered, comfortable, stable, and ready to continue the rest of her healing at home.

Owners who have gone through a LECA surgery journey will understand that recovery is often not a straight road. There can be wound management, discharge, dressing changes, vet reviews, medication, and plenty of patience along the way.

Every bunny heals differently, but early intervention, close monitoring, and teamwork between the owner, vet, and recovery team can make a huge difference.

We’re proud of you, Cleo. ❤️🐰

Managing gut stasis is really not as straightforward as many people think.

10 years ago, we followed the standard instructions given to us — support feed every 4–6 hours, give the medications, monitor closely. Yet some rabbits still didn’t improve, and we couldn’t understand why.

Over time, after handling thousands of gut stasis cases, we realised that rabbits are living beings, not machines. Their condition can change very quickly. A stomach that feels relatively normal now may become bloated a few hours later. A rabbit that is nibbling a little now may stop eating completely in the next few hours.

That’s when we started asking ourselves:

If a rabbit is already not eating, what makes us so confident that the gut will continue moving smoothly for the next 4–6 hours?

The reality is, we can’t.

That’s why gut management isn’t just about feeding every few hours. It’s about reassessing constantly — appetite, faecal output, gut sounds, abdominal feel, posture, behaviour, hydration, response to medications, and how all these factors change over time.

Sometimes the right thing to do 6 hours ago may no longer be the right thing to do now.

This is also why two rabbits with “gut stasis” can require completely different approaches, and why experience, observation, and judgement play such a big role in recovery.

Recovery isn’t just about following a protocol. It’s about understanding what the rabbit is telling us at that moment and adjusting accordingly.

Part 1: Cleo’s Recovery Journey 🐰

Cleo underwent a Leca (ear surgery) and came to us immediately after discharge for recovery care.

Sometimes healing isn’t always straightforward. As expected, some pus started to emerge from the surgical wound during the recovery process. Because we perform daily wound checks and cleaning, we were able to spot the changes early, clean away any significant discharge, and promptly update the vet & the owner.

The initial plan was for veterinary wound reviews and cleaning to be performed once a week. However, based on our observations and feedback to the owner, the vet subsequently recommended increasing the frequency to every 2–3 days instead.

This is why close monitoring during recovery matters — subtle changes can be picked up early, allowing timely intervention before they become bigger issues.

Stay tuned for Part 2…
