Because being around other dogs doesn’t always mean chase and mouth one another.

We can also teach them alternative behaviours such as lying beside each other or even just eating or resting in the presence of each other.

Mouthing, growling, chasing and tackling can sometimes look scary to us, and it’s easy to step in and separate puppies at the slightest sign of rough play.

But if both puppies are communicating well and choosing to continue playing, interrupting them too quickly may cause frustration and take away opportunities for them to learn from one another.

Knowing when to let play continue, and when to step in, is an important part of supporting healthy puppy play.

Healthy puppy play is important because it gives puppies opportunities to learn how to control their strength and adjust their play style through feedback from one another.

Humans don’t always need to step in. We intervene when play becomes unsafe, or when a puppy doesn’t adjust their play after receiving feedback from another puppy (or dog).

Learning to observe play and knowing when to step in is an important part of helping puppies have positive experiences with one another.

One of the assignments I worked on as part of my continuing education with DogNosticsEducation Education.
This particular module took me almost 2 months to complete.
The training process is surprisingly intricate, with so many layers of finer details that I had to work through, revise and fine-tune.
Thankful for Cookie’s patience in doing this with me.
