Dogs and cats are often asked to fast before sedation or general anaesthesia because anaesthetic drugs can reduce their normal protective reflexes. If they regurgitate while anaesthetised, there is a risk of stomach contents entering the lungs.

Rabbits are different. They cannot vomit, so routine prolonged fasting is generally unnecessary. Their digestive system also relies on a regular intake of food to keep functioning normally.

That’s why rabbits are usually allowed to continue eating before their procedure. 🌿
