Brad Pitt may have spent decades working with some of Hollywood’s biggest stars, but one of the things that can still improve a difficult day for him is remarkably simple: walking through the door and finding a dog waiting on the other side.

At the September 16 premiere of Heart of the Beast in Franklin, Tennessee, Pitt revealed that his own pack has recently grown. He now has three dogs, including a rescue who became the newest addition to the family. When asked about coming home after working with another dog on set, Pitt explained that his pets were more curious than jealous. For him, having dogs around simply makes life better.

It was an especially appropriate admission considering the movie he was there to celebrate. In Heart of the Beast, Pitt plays James Belmont, a Special Forces officer stranded deep in the Alaskan wilderness after a plane crash. His partner in survival is his combat dog Odin, and the story centers heavily on the trust and dependence between the two.

The dog behind Odin has an impressive story of his own. His real name is Uber, and Pitt recently revealed that the German Shepherd was originally a search-and-rescue dog before retiring. Dog trainer Andrew Simpson found Uber in New Zealand, where the movie was filmed, and prepared him for the production. Pitt became so impressed with his canine costar that he has repeatedly described Uber as one of the film’s real stars.

Dogs even joined Pitt on the red carpet. Four adoptable rescue dogs from Wags & Walks attended the premiere, turning a major Hollywood event into an opportunity to put rescue animals in front of an enormous audience.

For all the celebrity names and movie spectacle surrounding the night, Pitt’s simplest observation may be the one dog owners understand best.

A difficult day can follow you all the way home.

Then the door opens, a tail starts wagging, and suddenly the day does not seem quite as heavy.
