In light of Animal Welfare Week, today is also Pet Obesity Awareness Day! 🐾 A healthy weight is an important part of your cat’s overall wellbeing, but managing it isn’t just about feeding less. It’s about building healthy, sustainable habits around food, activity and enrichment.
Here are a few simple tips you can try:
🕐 Consistent feeding routineFeed around the same times each day instead of constantly topping up the bowl. A predictable routine can also help reduce food-seeking behaviour.
🍗 Count the treats too
Treats, toppers and little extras all contribute to your cat’s daily intake, keep them in mind when planning their overall food intake.
🧩 Make meals more engaging
Try puzzle feeders, food toys or hiding small portions around the home where appropriate; these can add mental stimulation while encouraging natural foraging behaviours.
🤎 Include non-food rewards
Not every good behaviour needs to end with a treat! Try brushing, cheek rubs, or their favourite toy instead.
Remember — every cat is different! Their diet, portions and feeding routine should be tailored to their individual needs. Good welfare is also about helping our cats live healthy, happy and enriched lives 🐱
For concerns about your cat’s weight or diet, speak to your veterinarian for advice tailored to their individual needs.
