🐾 Is your dog at risk of hip dysplasia? 🦴

Hip dysplasia can affect dogs of all sizes, and early assessment can make a big difference. A PennHIP assessment provides an objective way to evaluate hip laxity and helps identify dogs at risk of developing hip dysplasia and osteoarthritis.

At Advanced VetCare, PennHIP assessment is available to help you better understand your dog’s hip health — so you can make informed decisions about prevention, management and long-term wellbeing. ❤️

🦜 When your bird needs help, every minute matters.

This 2-month-old budgie came in lethargic and in need of urgent veterinary attention. Dr. Zachary Hon, assisted by Gerick from our night-shift nursing team, provided care during the emergency.

While we are not avian specialists, our team has experience caring for birds, including patients who require attention after regular clinic hours.

At Advanced Vetcare, we believe bird emergencies deserve to be taken seriously — especially when help can be difficult to find at night.

Ehrlichiosis in Dogs | The Silent Threat Carried by Ticks 🕷️🐾

A tick bite may seem insignificant, but it can sometimes introduce Ehrlichia bacteria into your dog’s bloodstream, leading to a potentially serious infection known as ehrlichiosis. Early signs can be subtle—your dog may simply seem more tired than usual, lose interest in food, or develop a fever. As the disease progresses, swollen lymph nodes, weakness, low platelet counts, unexplained bruising, nosebleeds, or other unusual bleeding may occur. 🩸

What makes ehrlichiosis particularly concerning is its effect on the blood and immune system. A reduced platelet count can increase the risk of bleeding, while prolonged or severe infection may lead to more significant health complications. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of your dog’s clinical history, physical examination, blood tests, and specific testing for Ehrlichia infection. 🔬🩺

The good news? Early detection and appropriate veterinary treatment can make a meaningful difference. Regular tick prevention and routine checks after outdoor activities are also essential in reducing your dog’s risk.

If your dog is showing unusual tiredness, fever, bruising, bleeding, or other unexplained changes, don’t wait for the signs to become severe. Sometimes, the smallest warning signs deserve the closest attention. 💚

TICK-BORNE DISEASE IN DOGS | When Something So Small Can Pose a Serious Threat 🐾

They are tiny, often difficult to spot, and easy to underestimate—but ticks can carry pathogens capable of causing significant illness in dogs. Tick-borne diseases may begin with subtle changes such as tiredness, reduced appetite, fever, weakness, swollen lymph nodes, pale gums, joint discomfort, bruising, or unusual bleeding. What makes these infections particularly concerning is that some dogs may appear only mildly unwell while the disease continues to progress, potentially affecting the blood, immune system, and vital organs. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of clinical examination and laboratory testing, which may include complete bloodwork, blood-smear evaluation, antibody testing, or PCR, depending on the suspected infection and the dog’s history. The good news? Prevention is within our reach. Regular tick control, routine checks after outdoor adventures, and prompt veterinary attention when something seems unusual can help protect your dog from a threat that is small in size—but not in consequence. Because protecting your dog often begins with noticing the little things. 🐶🔬🌿

When hip pain starts to limit the life they love… Total Hip Replacement can make a difference.

Hip disease in dogs can lead to pain, limping, stiffness and difficulty walking. Over time, these problems can affect more than just mobility — they can affect a dog’s overall quality of life.

So, what is a Total Hip Replacement?

Total Hip Replacement (THR) is an advanced orthopaedic procedure where a painful, damaged hip joint is replaced with an artificial joint.

The goal is simple:

✨ Reduce pain
🐕 Improve movement and walking
🏃 Restore mobility and activity
❤️ Improve overall quality of life

One of the most rewarding changes can be seeing the difference in their gait — from a painful limp and difficulty bearing weight to a smoother, more comfortable walk.

THR is not suitable for every dog. A thorough assessment by a veterinary team is important to determine whether your dog is a suitable candidate.

Because sometimes, it’s not just about fixing a hip.

It’s about helping them get back to enjoying life — one comfortable step at a time. 🐾

Heartworm Disease in Dogs
The mosquito bite your dog can’t afford to ignore
Heartworm disease is a potentially serious and potentially fatal parasitic disease caused by Dirofilaria immitis and spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. Once inside a dog, the parasite develops over several months, and adult worms can live in the blood vessels of the lungs and, in advanced cases, affect the heart. Early infection may show few or no obvious signs, but as the disease progresses, dogs may develop a persistent cough, tiredness, reduced exercise tolerance, weight loss, weakness, difficulty breathing or fainting. Severe cases can lead to abdominal swelling and life-threatening heart and lung complications. Because mosquitoes can bite dogs both indoors and outdoors, exposure is possible even for pets that rarely leave the home. Prevention is key—regular veterinary check-ups, appropriate heartworm testing and a veterinarian-recommended preventive plan can help protect your dog from this serious disease. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear; speak with your veterinarian about year-round heartworm prevention and the right protection for your pet.

Protect. Prevent. Test.

Leptospirosis in Dogs & Cats

Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease caused by *Leptospira* bacteria that primarily affects dogs but can also infect cats. It is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread from animals to people. Pets usually become infected through contact with urine from infected animals, or by exposure to contaminated water, soil, or mud. The incubation period is typically **4–12 days** after exposure.

In dogs, common signs include fever, lethargy, loss of appetite, vomiting, diarrhea, increased thirst and urination, muscle pain, jaundice, and in severe cases, kidney or liver disease. Cats often show milder signs or may have no obvious symptoms, although fever, reduced appetite, lethargy, and kidney or liver abnormalities can occur.

If leptospirosis is suspected, your veterinarian may recommend diagnostic tests such as a complete blood count (CBC), blood chemistry profile, urinalysis, PCR testing, and antibody (MAT/serology) testing. Early diagnosis is important to assess organ involvement and confirm infection.

If you have concerns that your pet may have been exposed to leptospirosis or is showing compatible signs, please contact any of our clinics for advice or to arrange an examination:
