πŸ’‘ How much light do your corals REALLY need?

If you've been reefing for a while, you've probably heard numbers like:

πŸͺΈ Soft Corals: 50–150 PAR
🌺 LPS Corals: 75–200 PAR
🌈 SPS Corals: 200–350+ PAR

But what does PAR actually mean β€” and should you really be chasing a specific number?

PAR measures the amount of photosynthetically active light reaching a particular point in your aquarium.

And here's the important part:

More PAR does NOT automatically mean healthier corals.

Too little light can result in poor growth, browning and dull coloration. Too much can cause light stress, pale tissue and even bleaching.

The trick is giving each coral the right amount of light β€” and allowing it time to acclimate.

Your reef also doesn't have just ONE PAR reading.

Light intensity changes depending on water depth, rockwork, shadows, mounting height, fixture position and where the coral actually sits in the aquarium.

That's why mapping your tank can be so useful.

In our latest guide, we break down:

πŸ’‘ What PAR actually measures
πŸͺΈ Typical PAR ranges for Softies, LPS & SPS
πŸ“ How to measure PAR around your reef
🌈 PAR vs spectrum and PUR
⏰ Photoperiod and Daily Light Integral
β˜€οΈ Signs of too much or too little light
πŸ“ˆ How to acclimate corals safely
πŸͺ¨ How to create different lighting zones

Setting up a new reef? The Re**er carries reef lighting and the other equipment you'll need to build your system β€” including tanks, filtration, protein skimmers, return pumps, wavemakers, salt mix, RO/DI equipment, test kits and more.

And remember:

A PAR meter tells you how much light is there.

Your coral tells you whether you got it right. πŸͺΈ

🌊 Is your reef getting the right amount of flow?

Water movement is one of the most important β€” and often misunderstood β€” parts of keeping a healthy reef tank.

Too little flow and detritus starts collecting in dead spots. Too much direct flow and your corals can stay closed, become stressed or even suffer tissue damage.

And different corals want different things.

πŸͺΈ Soft corals generally prefer gentler, indirect movement.
🌊 LPS like Euphyllia need enough flow to sway naturally β€” not get blasted around.
πŸ’¨ SPS such as Acropora generally thrive with stronger, turbulent and multidirectional flow.

The trick isn't simply buying the strongest wavemaker you can find. Good reef flow is about creating movement throughout the aquarium, reducing dead spots and making sure water reaches the places your corals actually need it.

We break down tank turnover, wavemaker positioning, dead spots, surface agitation, flow for different coral types and how to tell whether your current is too strong or too weak in our latest guide.

Payday plan: β€œI’m just buying ONE coral.” 😌

5 minutes later…

β€œBro, this one also nice.”
β€œEh that one also.”
β€œOkay lah, pack for me.” πŸ˜‚

Total damage: S$828.50 πŸ’Έ

Every re**er knows the danger of saying β€œI’m just looking.” Once the new arrivals start glowing under the lights, self-control suddenly disappears. πŸ‘€πŸͺΈ

A small pond, a simple request, and a chance to create something meaningful for the kids who spend time here. 🌿🐟

The Re**er was invited to help bring more life to this temple pond by adding plants and koi, while also sharing simple tips with the children on how to care for the fish and understand the responsibility that comes with keeping them. πŸ’§

More than just improving the pond, this was part of The Re**er’s effort to increase awareness about aquatic life, responsible fish keeping, and the importance of caring for the environments we create for them. 🌱

The project was completed at zero profit β€” simply as a small way for us to give back to the community and hopefully leave the children with a memorable experience along the way. ❀️

Sometimes, the smallest projects can have the biggest purpose. πŸ™
