From anaesthesia monitoring to blood draws, medication preparation to keeping our patients entertained, our veterinary nurses do it all. 🩺

Behind every smooth procedure, every well-prepared patient and every wagging tail is a nurse who is constantly learning, adapting and sharpening their skills.

Their role is vast, their knowledge runs deep, and their ability to juggle a hundred things at once never ceases to amaze us. 🤍

🪥 Furkid Care 101: Teeth Brushing ✨

Dental care is an important part of keeping our furkids healthy. Brushing their teeth at home really can make a difference! 🐶🐱

Not sure where to start? Here’s our simple step-by-step guide:
🦷 Start slowly and let your furkid get comfortable with having their mouth handled
🪥 Introduce a toothbrush and toothpaste or finger brush or dental wipes
👆 Gently lift the lips and brush along the surfaces of the teeth, especially where plaque tends to build up
⏱️ Keep sessions short and positive. Consistency matters more than perfection!

Ideally, aim for daily brushing. But if your furkid isn’t quite ready for that, don’t give up! Some brushing is better than none. 💛

And remember, brushing helps control plaque, but it doesn’t replace professional dental examinations and scaling when needed.

Part 2!

Some things may seem like little details… until you realise just how much they make a difference.

🍽️ A separate pantry for our furkids for their food, their meds, their treats. Yes you read that right! They have their own pantry. 💙

🐈 A portable ultrasound machine which means diagnostics can come to the patient, wherever they’re most comfortable because sometimes bringing the equipment to them just makes more sense.

🪑 Foldable examination tables because sometimes you need a table… and sometimes you just need more space. 😌

🚪 Consult rooms that connect straight to the treatment room allowing less back-and-forth, smoother patient flow, and quicker access when your furkid needs us.

💌 Handwritten condolence cards ♥️ To us, caring for our patients and clients doesn’t stop at medical treatment. Goodbyes are difficult, and we believe they deserve a little more than a generic message.

🦜🔍 Tiny patient, big procedure!

Meet adorable baby Munchy who came to us after swallowing a feeding tube!

Foreign body ingestion can happen in birds and yes, we do endoscopy for birds too!

For this little patient, our Veterinary Surgeon Dr Hsu performed an endoscopic procedure to locate and retrieve the swallowed tube.

The procedure involved:
🫁 General anaesthesia & intubation
🔍 Endoscopic examination
🧲 Careful retrieval of the foreign body
🌡️ Recovery and close monitoring in an incubator

The good news? The feeding tube was successfully removed and our little friend was good to go home! ❤️

So, what is endoscopy useful for?

Endoscopy allows our vets to look inside the body using a small camera and, when appropriate, use specialised instruments to retrieve foreign material or collect samples. It can be useful for selected cases involving the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract. And most importantly, it's not limited to dogs and cats! 🐶🐱🦜

However, not every foreign body is suitable for endoscopic removal. The location, size, shape and nature of the object, as well as the species and condition of the patient, all help determine whether endoscopy or surgery is the safest option.

This case showcases how having the right equipment and expertise can allow us to offer minimally invasive options to a wide range of patients, even our tiniest ones. 💕

☁️🐑 “Wait… I have eyes?” 👀🐶

Meet Kayla, the adorable 4-month-old Old English Sheepdog puppy! 💕 She came in for her health check and monthly parasite prevention, and we couldn’t help but notice one very important thing…
Her fur was so long, we could barely find her eyes! 😂☁️

💧Medicating 101💧: How to apply topical parasite prevention!

Meet Dino! 🐾 In today’s episode, we’re showing you how to apply a topical parasite preventative correctly!

💧 Here’s how:
1️⃣ Part the fur until you can clearly see the skin.
2️⃣ Apply the medication directly onto the skin, not just onto the fur.
3️⃣ Start higher up on the neck and work your way down as needed. As we used NexGard Combo in this video, it contains a relatively larger volume of liquid, so spreading the application area down the neck helps keep the product from pooling in one spot.

⚠️ A few important reminders after application:
🐾 Prevent your furkid (and other furkids!) from licking the application area.
🙅🏻‍♀️ Avoid touching the area until it has dried.
🚿 Avoid bathing/showering your furkid for at least 2 days after application.

📅 For ongoing protection, parasite prevention is best given monthly, according to your veterinarian’s recommendations.

Using the right product is only half the job. Correct application = better protection! 🛡️✨

Bella and the Case of the Mystery Wire 🕵🏻‍♀️🐶

🔎 Can you spot it?
We started with two X-rays… and somewhere in there was a tiny metallic surprise 👀

Bella had swallowed a mysterious wire, so it was time to CHOOSE YOUR CHARACTER:
⚔️ Surgery
🤮 Induce vomiting
🪄 Endoscopy

But which one was the right move?

For Bella, we decided endoscopy was the safest option. Because the foreign object was metallic and potentially sharp, we were concerned that bringing it back up through the oesophagus could cause lacerations or injury to the surrounding tissue. 😬

So… scope it is! 🔍✨

Our scope revealed that the wire had become entangled in a rather suspicious ball of hair and firm, fibrous material… which looked suspiciously like 🍍 pineapple?!

But before we could call it a case closed, we had to X-ray the mystery ball to make sure the wire was actually hiding inside it. 🕵🏻‍♀️

Mystery solved. Wire retrieved. Bella saved. ✅

And the best part? Bella woke up quickly from her sedation and was soon back to her usual bouncy self! 💨🐶💕

When appropriate, endoscopy can allow us to retrieve certain foreign objects without invasive abdominal surgery, which may mean less trauma and a shorter recovery time.

✨ If your pet swallows something they shouldn’t, don’t wait and see. Contact us as soon as possible. Depending on what was swallowed, when it happened and where the object is located, we can determine the safest way to retrieve it.
