For my international colleagues, here is a concise breakdown of the landmark legislation that has just completely reshaped the breeding landscape in Europe:
A Absolute Ban on Inbreeding:
The law officially prohibits all first-degree matings (parent × offspring, full and half-siblings, grandparents × grandchildren). Close inbreeding is now legally classified as an offense against animal welfare.
The Elimination of "Torture Breeding" (Qualzucht):
Breeding animals with extreme phenotypes or hidden genetic defects that cause suffering—including unmonitored polygenic cardiac pathologies like early-onset HCM—is strictly banned.
Strict Breeding Limits: Female cats and dogs are limited to a maximum of 3 litters within a 2-year period, followed by a mandatory 1-year rest. Females with two cesarean sections must be retired immediately.
Compulsory Registration & Traceability: Amateur breeding is effectively abolished. Every breeder must be officially registered with the government. All animals must be microchipped and linked to interconnected EU-wide national databases before any transaction or online listing.

The international scientific community of veterinary cardiologists has officially confirmed it: the initial theory by American researchers (Dr. Kate Meurs’ laboratory, 2021) claiming that a mutation in the ALMS1 gene causes Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) in Sphynx cats has completely failed independent verification.

Major independent studies conducted by scientists across Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and Asia have proven a total lack of correlation between this gene and the disease.
How Independent Science Refuted the "American Theory"
New Zealand and Australian Study (September 2024): Cardiologists performed a large-scale screening of Sphynx cats and discovered that the ALMS1 mutation was present in 70.9% of absolutely healthy cats. The scientists officially stated: "The ALMS1 variant is not associated with the clinical diagnosis of HCM."
Italian and German Studies (Dr. Turba’s Lab et al.): European geneticists revealed a colossal frequency of this variant in the general Sphynx population (noting issues like allele dropout). Laboratories profit heavily from selling these tests, even when the broader scientific community recognizes them as completely uninformative—just as previously occurred with specific pseudo-mutations in other cat breeds.

Because the ALMS1 DNA test has proven to be a scientific hoax that offers a false sense of security, it cannot be used to clear breeding lines. HCM in Sphynx cats is a complex, polygenic disease, meaning it is governed by multiple other genes that have not yet been mapped.
Consequently, serial НСМ screening across generations remains the sole, absolute gold standard for identifying affected bloodlines and managing breeding programs.

The Two Critical Danger Peaks of HCM in Sphynx Cats.
Veterinary cardiologists identify two distinct age peaks when Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) is most likely to manifest in the Sphynx breed:
Age 1–2 Years (Early/Juvenile Peak): Often triggered by sexual maturity, rapid growth, and initial breeding stress. It progresses aggressively if genetically present.
Age 5–7 Years (Late-Onset Peak): The most insidious phase. A cat can scan completely clear at ages 2, 3, and 4, but develop severe myocardial thickening during this mature stage.

Conclusion:
An ultrasound scan is a direct reflection of physical reality and actual cardiac health. Stopping ultrasound screenings at age 4 or 5 is a critical mistake. To truly ensure a line is clear and to protect the breed's future, breeding individuals and their parents must undergo regular ultrasound heart scans by certified veterinary cardiologists until they reach at least 8-9 years of age.
