You’ve built a leaving-routine that feels like clockwork…but life changes.

Maybe you moved home or your work schedule changed. And suddenly your dog seems unsettled being home alone again.

This is actually something I see quite often. Dogs with separation-related issues don’t just learn that you leave. They also learn that your familiar leaving routine predicts that they’ll be safe.
So when that routine suddenly changes, it can create uncertainty. And for a generally more anxious dog, uncertainty can feel unsafe.

The good news? It doesn’t mean you’ve gone back to square one.
Instead of changing everything at once, introduce new routines gradually.

🐾 Make one small change at a time.
🐾 Test new pre-departure cues with a Door Is A Bore exercise to see whether your dog stays relaxed.
🐾 If you notice your dog becoming more alert or worried, take a step back and rebuild confidence before adding anything else.

If you need help working through a regression or change in routine? Send me a DM and let’s chat.

If you’ve been looking into…”𝘏𝘰𝘸 𝘥𝘰 𝘐 𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘮𝘺 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘣𝘢𝘳𝘬𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘐 𝘭𝘦𝘢𝘷𝘦?” / “𝘊𝘢𝘯 𝘴𝘦𝘱𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘹𝘪𝘦𝘵𝘺 𝘣𝘦 𝘤𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘥?” / “𝘋𝘰 𝘐 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘯𝘦𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘦𝘳?”
..you’re definitely not the only one.

If your dog’s stress is mild, you’re able to read their body language well, and you can commit to gradual, consistent training, many dogs make fantastic progress without professional support.

But if your dog is panicking the moment you pick up your keys, barking or howling relentlessly, trying to escape, becoming destructive, or simply can’t cope with even the shortest absences, it’s time to think about getting help.

The biggest advantage of working with a separation anxiety specialist isn’t that we have a magic solution.

It’s that we help you:
🐾 Understand why your dog is struggling.
🐾 Prevent common mistakes that can slow progress.
🐾 Adjust the training as your dog learns.
🐾 Recognise the tiny body language changes that tell you whether you’re on the right track.

My aim has never been to make my clients dependent on me. It’s actually the complete opposite. I want you to become the person who understands your dog so well that you know exactly the how/ when/ where and why.

And remember, you don’t have to wait until your dog is in full panic mode before asking for help. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, second-guessing yourself, or you’re weeks (or months) into training without knowing whether you’re doing the right thing, getting support can often save you a huge amount of time, stress and frustration.

Sometimes DIY is exactly the right approach. Sometimes having an experienced guide beside you makes all the difference.
Neither option is “better”. The right choice is the one that gives your dog the best chance of feeling safe and confident when home alone.

“My puppy cries every time I leave the room.” 😟

If you’ve found yourself Googling...
“Does my puppy have separation anxiety?”
“Should I ignore my puppy crying?”
“My puppy follows me everywhere.”
“Have I made my puppy too attached?”..you’re not alone.

The good news is that this is often completely normal puppy behaviour. Young puppies are hardwired to stay close to their caregiver. In the wild, being separated from the person keeping them safe would have been risky, so following you and protesting when you disappear is a perfectly natural response.

It doesn’t automatically mean your puppy has separation anxiety.

Every puppy is different. Some puppies happily wander off and nap on their own from day one. Others would happily follow you into the shower if they could. 🚿🐶

Neither is “right” or “wrong”. They’re simply individuals. The important thing is not to rush independence.

Your first job is to help your puppy feel safe, secure and confident while you’re together. A puppy who feels safe is far more likely to develop the confidence to cope when they’re alone.

From there, you can gently teach them that spending short periods on their own is safe too. Think gradual exposure, not “getting them used to it”.

There is no rush.

Giving your puppy the right foundations now can make a huge difference to how they feel about being home alone later in life.
If you’d like a clear, step-by-step plan to help your puppy build those skills from the very beginning, my Separation Training Blueprint was created for exactly that.

💬 How old was your puppy when you started teaching them to be happy on their own? Or is this something you’re working on right now?

It’s a minefield, the net, when it comes to advice about separation training (and many other things!!!).

If you’ve been searching for answers, your dog is obviously struggling with something. If you’re unsure and are seeking help, make sure you work with a qualified professional (please) 💚🐕

This separation training exercise is a great example of the importance of YOU knowing exactly what to do (during your dog’s separation exercises).

What can you see in this video that may, or may not be, of concern?

Would you stop the training exercise at any point? The answer isn’t as obvious as you might think.

And remember; separation training takes time. And that is why my separation training programmes focus on turning you into the expert, so you can then take the training forward by yourself.

If you want to learn more about my training programmes, please get in touch.

This important part of separation anxiety training success is often overlooked!!

Meet Juno: this little fur lady knows and trusts her humans’ leaving routine. An important basic component to help your dog overcome their fear of being home alone, of course.

However, she would really struggle now and then, with longer durations.

So we started digging further into potential underlying health issues, as she’s also been displaying other behaviours outside of separation training that could be influenced by physical discomfort.

She previously had a pain meds trial, which didn’t amount to much.
So we spoke to the vet and discussed trying something else.

And so far, so very good. She’s not only back to acing her separation training but also shows improvement with other challenging behaviours.
Plus sleeps much more deeply, poos less (it was a lot before!) and more.

What you can take from Juno’s story: don’t give up at the first hurdle. I.e. if one pain meds trial didn’t show any improvement, don’t give up, keep pushing and challenging your vet, if necessary. If you can see other signs that your dog seems off, then there is most probably something going on. YOU KNOW YOUR DOG BEST!!!

And if you need help / a professional to have a look at your dog’s progress, send mea DM and let’s chat.

When your dog panics as you leave the house, it’s easy to feel as though they think you’ve abandoned them.

Many owners carry an enormous amount of guilt because of this.
But that’s not what’s going on.

Your dog isn’t worrying that you’ve left forever. They’re struggling because they don’t know what happens next.

For a dog with separation anxiety, that uncertainty feels unsafe. And when something doesn’t feel safe, the brain goes into survival mode. That’s when we see the pacing, barking, howling, drooling, destruction or desperate attempts to follow.

The good news? Feelings can change. Through gradual, carefully planned training, your dog can learn that your departures reliably predict safety, not panic.

Over time, leaving becomes... well... a bit boring.
No big emotions.
No panic.
No need to worry.
Just another ordinary part of the day.

If you’re in the middle of separation anxiety training, remember that every tiny, successful absence is helping your dog rewrite what leaving means.

🚨 If your dog panics when you leave... please don’t do this.

If you’ve been Googling things like...
❓ ”How do I stop my dog barking when I leave?”
❓ ”Can I just let them cry it out?”
❓ ”Should I ignore my dog?”
❓ ”Will a crate help separation anxiety?”
❓ ”What’s the quickest fix?”..you’ve probably come across some truly awful advice.

Things like:
🚫 ”Just leave them. They’ll get used to it.”
🚫 ”Put them in a crate until they stop barking.”
🚫 ”Use a bark collar.”
🚫 ”They’re manipulating you.”
🚫 ”They need to learn.”

Here’s the situation...separation anxiety is fear!!! And it’s certainly NOT your dog being ’disobedient’.

When a dog is panicking, they’re not choosing their behaviour. They’re trying to cope with something that feels genuinely frightening.
Punishing, ignoring or forcing them through that fear doesn’t teach them that being alone is safe.

It often teaches them the exact opposite.

The result can be:
🐾 More anxiety.
🐾 Panic that escalates even faster.
🐾 Learned helplessness or shutdown.
🐾 Self-injury, escape attempts or redirected aggression.

If you’ve already tried some of this advice because you genuinely thought it would help, please don’t beat yourself up.
Most owners do.
They’re simply following the loudest voices on the internet.

The good news is that there is another way.

A kind, science-based approach that works by changing how your dog feels about being home alone, rather than simply trying to “stop the barking”.

Because your dog isn’t trying to give you a hard time. They’re having a hard time.

Things happen when your dog is home alone.
A car door slams outside. Someone rings the doorbell or walks past the window.
Little disturbances like these are completely normal. What really matters is whether your dog can relax again afterwards.

One of the biggest milestones in separation anxiety training is when a dog briefly gets up… checks something out… and then chooses to settle again.

That moment tells us something very important: that your dog is starting to understand that being alone isn’t scary.

Over time, as your dog gains confidence, these small interruptions become less of a big deal. They notice the noise, investigate if they want to, and then go back to resting. Dogs often react to environmental triggers like outside noises or movement, but learning to relax again afterwards is part of developing emotional resilience when alone.

And don’t forget to celebrate the first time your dog resettles during a separation training session.
Because that moment is huge!!
It’s one of the first real signs that your dog is learning they can cope with being home alone.

There are four subtle stress signals that told my client that their furry buddy (his name is actually Buddy 🥰) isn’t having the best time home alone.

Can you spot which those are?

Looking out for those subtle stress signals is what good separation training is all about. To ensure your dog stays under threshold, feels safe and gradually changes their association with being home alone from panic to neutral/ safe/ nothing to worry about.

And it’s my job to teach my clients those body language signals. To analyse them in context, to know what means what for their individual dog.

Buddy’s people have been 100% dedicated throughout our training journey together. And they have been excellent at understanding what their lil’ dude needs, both when home alone and when out exploring the world together 👌👏
