Welcome to Sava’s Safe Haven 🐶

We are a rescue shelter based in Romania looking after dogs (and some cats) of all shapes and sizes. In 2012, the Sava family, led by Oana Sava fundraised to buy a piece of land near Galati in Romania and began constructing the shelter with their bare hands. Initially, it was basic, offering rudimentary shelter from the harsh Romanian weather, but over the last 8 ye

ars, and following a huge amount of hard work the shelter has grown to be home to over 300 dogs and cats, adding facilities such as a playground, a veterinary area, recovery and quarantine rooms. Work is ongoing with the shelter constantly evolving and improving thanks to donations. Sadly there is a huge number of street dogs across Romania, some born there, others abandoned, but all with a story to tell of having been let down by people and the animal welfare system in Romania. Sava's Safe Haven is a registered charity, working closely with the local community to offer education on how to care for their animals and basic medical care including spay and neuter surgery for those who cannot afford it. We also rehome animals across Europe, focusing mainly on Germany and the UK as we have established local teams of volunteers in these countries who help us. There are also many dogs who cannot be rehomed, and who will live out their days at the shelter where Oana ensures they are safe and cared for. As you can imagine the cost of food, veterinary care, beds, and supplies along with shelter maintenance is very high. 🐾 Meet Lotti: A gentle, timid soul waiting for her turning point 🐾
Sweet Lotti (born 2022) is a small, long-legged beauty under 10kg, and the sister to Ben and Walti. Like her brothers, Lotti has missed out on the wonders of the world and is currently gripped by an extreme fear of human touch. At the shelter, she tries her best to disappear, spending her days hiding at the very back of her kennel, terrified of the unknown.
To help Lotti overcome her deep fears and step out of the shadows, her future family needs to understand the dedicated journey ahead.
What Lotti’s future family needs to know:
Deeply Fearful of Touch: Lotti is intensely shy and will actively retreat from human contact. Gaining her trust cannot be rushed; it will require months of quiet, pressure-free presence where she is allowed to set the pace.
Utmost Patience Required: Her adopters must be exceptionally patient and understanding, prepared for a dog who will initially be completely shut down as she adjusts to the sights and sounds of life outside a kennel.
The Power of a Resident Dog: Lotti absolutely requires a kind, confident resident dog in her new home. Having a furry companion to mimic will be her greatest source of comfort and the key to showing her that life with humans can be safe.

Our handsome boy Tom is ready to find his forever family! This lovely 6-year-old male came to us as part of a rescue situation with his dad. While they clearly have a bond, they've been finding it a bit challenging to share the throne, so we've made the decision to rehome them separately to ensure they both thrive.
Tom is a confident and affectionate dog who absolutely adores people. He's friendly, loves attention, and will make a wonderful, loving companion. He's the kind of dog who will greet you with a wagging tail and be your shadow around the house.
We are specifically looking for a home where Tom will be the only male dog. Due to his desire to be the top dog, living with another male would likely cause ongoing stress for both dogs. He might be able to live with a very calm and submissive female dog, but this would require careful introductions and a home experienced in managing dog dynamics. Ideally, a home where he can be the sole focus of attention would be best.
