Natural mating is a pivotal step in canine breeding management and should never be approached casually. It presupposes that both male and female dogs have undergone appropriate genetic screening, health testing, fertility assessment, and prophylactic deworming and vaccination. Natural mating may be attempted on multiple occasions and, in some cases, with different sires. Importantly, the presence or absence of female receptivity does not reliably indicate the optimal mating time. For this reason, mating should never be forced on either partner.
