This mesmerizing image captured by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) reveals the nearby star-forming cluster NGC 1333, nestled in the Perseus molecular cloud. Located just 960 light-years away in the constellation Perseus, this vibrant stellar nursery is teeming with cosmic drama.
The glowing orange patches scattered throughout the image are Herbig-Haro objects—shockwaves created when jets of hot material from newborn stars collide with surrounding gas and dust. These fiery features are unmistakable signs of active star formation. Many of the stars here are still in their infancy, surrounded by discs of gas and dust where future planets are likely to take shape.
Brilliant stars dot the scene, each marked by a signature diffraction pattern—six long spikes and two short ones—caused by the design of JWST’s mirrors. The image color palette is equally striking: deep blues represent thick, cold dust clouds, while bright orange hues reveal areas glowing in infrared light.
This masterpiece was captured using JWST’s Near-InfraRed Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) and released to awe and inspire.
