Ehrlichiosis in dogs is a tick-borne disease. It’s common in the Philippines because of the tropical climate and stray dogs.
What happens / Symptoms
Ehrlichiosis is caused by Ehrlichia canis. It has 3 stages:
Acute stage – 1 to 3 weeks after bite
Fever, lethargy, loss of appetite
Enlarged lymph nodes, spleen
Nosebleeds, pinpoint red spots on skin/gums
Mild anemia, low platelets
Subclinical stage – Weeks to years
Dog looks normal but bacteria hide in spleen/bone marrow
Bloodwork shows low platelets. Most dogs stay here if immune system controls it
Chronic stage – If untreated
Severe anemia, bleeding disorders
Weight loss, depression
Eye problems: uveitis, retinal hemorrhage
Kidney failure, neurological issues
Can be fatal if bone marrow stops making blood cells
Where it comes from / How dogs get it
Source: The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus
This is the most common tick on dogs in PH.
Transmission:
Infected tick bites dog and feeds for 24-48 hours
Ehrlichia pass into dog’s bloodstream
infect white blood cells called monocytes and multiply
Dogs don’t spread it directly to other dogs or humans. You need the tick as the vector.
Prevention
Use tick prevention monthly: Nexgard, Bravecto, Simparica, Frontline. Ask a vet which works best for your area
Check and remove ticks daily, especially after walks in grass/weeds
Control ticks in environment with yard sprays if needed
Keep grass short, avoid stray dog areas
Pet Site Vet Clinic and other clinics offer tick prevention and blood tests for ehrlichiosis. If your dog has fever, nosebleeds, or is unusually tired and you’ve seen ticks, visit your vet ASAP.
