In the dead of winter, January 1925, a terrifying diphtheria outbreak struck the remote town of Nome, Alaska. The lives of hundreds— especially children— hung in the balance. The nearest supply of antitoxin serum? Over 500 miles away in Anchorage. Planes couldn’t fly. Ships were frozen in harbor. Roads didn’t reach that far.

So they turned to dogs.

More than 20 mushers and their teams of sled dogs braved one of the harshest Arctic winters on record, forming a relay through snow, ice, and -30°F temperatures to deliver the medicine. It was a desperate race against time—facing whiteout blizzards, frozen rivers, and deadly winds.

One dog, Togo, ran the longest and most treacherous leg— over 260 miles— through razor-thin ice and brutal storms. But it was Balto, leading the final team, who carried the serum into Nome. By the time they arrived, frostbitten and staggering, the whole nation was watching.

Balto became a national hero, honored with a statue in New York’s Central Park. But every dog who ran mattered. Together, they saved a town— not with speed, but with courage, loyalty, and the kind of determination only found in fur and frost.

They called it the Great Race of Mercy. And nearly a century later, their pawprints are still remembered.
