With the rainy season comes a higher risk of 𝒍𝒆𝒑𝒕𝒐𝒔𝒑𝒊𝒓𝒐𝒔𝒊𝒔 — a serious and potentially fatal bacterial infection in dogs.

The yellow discoloration of the gums and oral tissues seen in this photo is called 𝙟𝙖𝙪𝙣𝙙𝙞𝙘𝙚. It may indicate liver involvement and is one of the possible warning signs of severe leptospirosis.

𝙒𝙖𝙩𝙘𝙝 𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙛𝙤𝙧:
• Fever and weakness
• Loss of appetite
• Vomiting or diarrhea
• Muscle pain or difficulty walking
• Increased thirst or urination
• Reduced or absent urine output
• Yellow gums, eyes, or skin
• Dark or bloody urine

Leptospirosis can severely 𝙙𝙖𝙢𝙖𝙜𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙠𝙞𝙙𝙣𝙚𝙮𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙧. It is also 𝙯𝙤𝙤𝙣𝙤𝙩𝙞𝙘, meaning it may be transmitted from infected animals to humans.

𝙃𝙚𝙡𝙥 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙘𝙩 𝙮𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙙𝙤𝙜:
• Keep vaccinations updated
• Avoid floodwater, stagnant water, and muddy areas
• Do not allow pets to drink from puddles
• Practice proper rodent control
• Keep food, water bowls, and surroundings clean
• Seek veterinary care immediately if symptoms appear

𝙑𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 may not prevent every strain, but it significantly lowers the risk of infection and severe illness.

We are currently seeing an alarming increase in parvovirus cases among both cats and dogs.

As veterinarians, it is heartbreaking to see pets suffer — and sometimes lose their lives — from a disease that can be prevented through proper vaccination.

𝑷𝒂𝒓𝒗𝒐𝒗𝒊𝒓𝒖𝒔 is highly contagious and potentially fatal, especially in unvaccinated puppies and kittens. Please make sure your pets have completed their vaccination series and that their booster shots are up to date.
