Enrofloxacin ( baytril)
About the only thing that will treat salmonella
Successfully!
Salmonella you really wouldn’t wish it on any body
I good friend has a very sick bird he has tried everything
Sulfa drugs
Amoxicillin
Doxycycline
His bird just will not respond
Bird macaw
Symptoms green yellow droppings
Weight loss
Bird has been kept alive for the past 3 days by force feeding with hand rearing formula.

Please note I am not by any means a veterinarian nor pretend to be !

How did his bird get salmonella?
Easy very easy in-fact you cannot fight something you cannot see.

Salmonella is very deadly and easily spread.

Keeping and racing pigeons here in the Philippines salmonella is something that pokes it head up quite often so fortunately I always have Enrofloxacin on hand.

One thing on the market that stops bacteria dead in its tracks bleach common house hold bleach
Hence the reason we spray bleach in our complex once a week if not twice a week for as little as 40 peso a litre all bacteria can be killed around your birds cages pathways ect.
So when people comment when visiting your house smells of bleach that’s one thing I like to hear after all we breed dogs and birds also chickens even race pigeons.

Is bleach harmful to your birds NO but I’m not spraying the birds just the cages and surrounding areas.

Common house hold bleach instead of 2 injections a day for 5 days.

So next time your bird goes from playful to fluffed up sever weight loss to not eating ?
You may just have the invisible killer salmonella?

Always best to consult your avian veterinarian before treating for this deadly disease!

👍
One fact that seems to bring on salmonella the weather we are having now lots of rain while still being hot and humid.

4 days in now and these two little guys are off and running.
Also moved into there larger accommodation.
For us it’s that 1st - 4 days as a rule that is the hardest.
While the CBC struggled until now and was being fed every hour his turned the corner and now going gang busters 👍
Like anything you find your way.
Unfortunately we did loose a CBC chick at 16 hours old ? Why ? It does happen ! Even to the more experienced breeders.
Why is it so hard until day 4 ?
For myself I’m not sure but after day 4 we expect 100% weaning as a rule !
Not to say they all make it but if you are on top of your game ( technique) no reason why it shouldn’t!
We finally have a good number of larger eggs coming now so we will focus on those for now 👌
Happy breeding……..

The push a hand rearers biggest mistake!
I put my scales away years ago and started treating baby chicks all individually?
Not by weight !
But by gains !
Also just by observation !
So many breeders run into trouble simply by over feeding pushing the baby too hard !
Last year I done a little experiment with the highest protein supplement on the market a middle range product also an affordable product ?
What product was better ?
None all chicks grew out a little differently but now entering sub adult hood you cannot tell one baby from the other.
So the push to get the chicks to the finish line ( weaning) can be the hand rearers worst enemy!

18 hours in
Feed no 8
Still the same mix nothing has changed
Over the last 3 feeds 6 hrs the p**ps have doubled
This is a good indication every thing is working well👍
What goes in must come out 👌
So far so good both babies are full of beans active then straight to sleep after the feed.
Question brooder temperature?
It’s set on 36.4
Lowest before heater kicks in 36.2
Hottest before cooling 36.8
I like it like that as now the hen wouldn’t be sitting so tight as she now has babies to feed👌
I will follow up on these two in a few days.

I’m doing it the wrong way 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Well I’m too old to do it any differently 👍

You do you I will do me👌

You just have to find a way that works for you
1/ works in with you budget.
2/ works into your spare time.
3/ works to what ever needs you have.

When ever any body messages anonymously they are normally the ones getting it all wrong ?

Not to gloat past 3 months here at D&R

38 eggs 37 hatches
37 chicks 36 weaned ( yes we have our loses)

So if it the wrong way I’m sticking to it 👌

Google is a great way to learn type in one thing and get 12 different ways of doing that one thing originally asked.
Not to say any of the 12 different ways are wrong they all most definitely work for those individuals 👍
Have a great day

The first feed both chicks are 3-5 hours old and ready for his or her very first feed!
Mix 7 parts water a pinch of electrolytes 1 part mix.
Feed temperature 36.9/37.1lots of breeders have been asking and saying they are loosing chicks 🐣 at 1-2-3 days old 🐣

Yes it can be difficult at times with most breeders the problem is over feeding?

I like the spoon for the first 3 days and I try to feed every 2 hours I will draw the night feed out to 4 hours but no longer.
2 chicks conure & cockatiel no different same for any day old or first feed 1-3 little mouth fulls is enough.

My only aim on day one is rehydration and ensuring the babies crop if functioning correctly.

No gains but as no 3-4-5-6 feeds go we like to see the babies responding to the spoon and taking a little more each time.

The only objective for day 1-5 is survival nothing more.

From love birds to our biggest ecelectus &AGP it’s the exact same approach.

Years ago I would run into problems and looses chicks at a young age all indications pointed towards over feeding too much too soon.

Slow and steady wins the race after all we have 3 months to make our gains 👍

I suppose over the many years we have hatched 100’s if not 1000’s
You never get sick of seeing a new baby hatch 🐣 👌

It’s absolutely deadly!
Salmonella & E-coli
A disease prone to the area?
Only last week we had a small out break ( only 1 bird) but even one bird is far too many.
Bacteria how do you deal with it !
Bacteria infection how do you stop it !
From one day your pet bird is in the cage looking fine then 2 days later fluffed up on the floor skinny lethargic and looking in very bad shape !!!!!

How do you get it it only take an infected visitor bird rodent chicken ( some body visiting from another aviary with traces of bacteria on there shoes)

Bleach bleach bleach or avi cleanse if your best defensive measure against high levels of bacteria.

Owning a collection of any birds ( high end low end)
They are all at risk !
But I clean my bowls regularly also the p**p trays water is clean I feed good quality feed SO HOW??
All it takes is one foreign p**p or one infected bird!
The p**p might be on the wire going unnoticed by the owner all it takes is your pet to come in contact with that p**p and it’s infected .

Bacteria only way to kill bacteria is a bleach agent sprayed regularly ( us twice a week )
We use a little pressure washer small pump pack will do.

Bleach may kill my bird ?
E-coli or salmonella most definitely will.
A little bleach will not harm your birds.

Bleach is very inexpensive and easy to handle
We even use it in our pets drinking water 3-5 drops only per 1 gallon or 4 litres just to ensure any nasty bugs that may have got buy the filters are now dead.

But a lot use mineral water 👍once in the pets bowl for 2-4 hours it’s no longer mineral water!

Bleach when it comes into contact with live bacteria cells kills it there and then 👍

We clean our bowls daily we feed our birds fresh daily we spray our complex also garden paths house weekly one or two times a week.

How many breeders have lost a bird suddenly with in 2-4 days the bird just falls away nothing you do helps ? I know of 40-50 breeders we have even lost a few over the years.
How do you know it’s e- coli or salmonella or a mega bacteria infection ?
You really don’t but when or if your spraying a bleach agent and you never get ill birds it’s a very good sign it is !

Whats the ratio for bleach our little pressure washer has a detergent mixing bottle on it we fill that with bleach and away we go 👍

We do try to avoid spaying the birds we concentrate on roof walls and floor.

Just wrote this as over the past few months fellow breeders seem to have lost birds showing all the same symptoms?

If you do happen to find a bird showing these symptoms and you find it early your treatment is
Enrofloxacin - baytril.
Amoxicillin can work if only minor

So will spraying you cage completely eradicate it no but it your only defence against something you cannot see !

It’s Monday that’s cleaning and sterilisation day Floors scrubbed walls sprayed gotta keep those bugs at bay 👍
