Why Some Owners Only Come to the Vet When It’s Too Late
By Dr. Geoff Carullo, DVM, Dip. PCCP, Dip. PCVS
The Pain of “Too Late”
Every veterinarian knows this moment: a pet rushed into the clinic in critical condition, eyes pleading, owners in panic. Tests confirm what we already sense — the disease has been going on for weeks, maybe months. And despite all effort, we can only say the words no pet parent wants to hear: “If only you brought them in earlier.”
Why Does This Happen?
It’s easy to blame negligence, but the truth is more complicated. Owners delay vet visits for many reasons:
1. Finances.
Vet care can feel overwhelming to families already stretched thin. Many hope symptoms will pass, trying home remedies first.
2. Misinformation.
Advice from friends, online groups, or even Google often convinces owners that things aren’t serious. “Normal lang yan,” they’re told — until it isn’t.
3. Fear and Denial.
Some owners notice warning signs but can’t face the possibility of bad news. They wait, hoping love alone will heal their pet.
4. Cultural Habits.
In the Philippines, pets are sometimes treated as secondary to human needs. The mindset of “gamot lang muna” or “hintayin natin” delays proper care.
The Consequence
The cost of waiting is almost always higher — not just financially, but emotionally. What could have been a simple case of early treatment becomes surgery, hospitalization, or even loss. Owners grieve. Vets carry the silent weight of knowing that timing could have changed everything.
The Take-Home
Vets don’t say “come early” because we want clinics full. We say it because prevention saves lives, money, and heartbreak. Early check-ups, routine vaccines, and quick action at the first sign of illness are not luxuries — they are lifelines.
Behind every delayed visit is a pet who deserved better timing. And sometimes, the kindest lesson we can give pet parents is this: waiting can cost more than acting now.
