RAINY SEASON REMINDER: WATCH OUT FOR LEPTOSPIROSIS! โ๐ถ
The rain may be fun for some of us, but floodwater and stagnant water can pose a serious health risk to our pets.
Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira. Dogs can become infected when their skin wounds or mucous membranes come into contact with contaminated water, soil, or urine from infected animals, particularly rodents.
And hereโs the scary part: leptospirosis doesnโt always start with dramatic symptoms.
A dog may initially seem simply tired or uninterested in food, but the infection can progress to serious kidney and liver disease.
๐จ Watch for:
๐พ Vomiting
๐พ Loss of appetite
๐พ Lethargy
๐พ Fever
๐พ Increased thirst or changes in urination
๐พ Yellowing of the gums or eyes
๐พ Abdominal pain
โ This rainy season, help keep your pets safe:
โ๏ธ Avoid floodwater and stagnant water
โ๏ธ Donโt let your dog drink from puddles, canals, or questionable water sources
โ๏ธ Minimize exposure to rodents and potentially contaminated areas
โ๏ธ Keep their environment clean
โ๏ธ Talk to your veterinarian about Leptospira vaccination
Leptospirosis is also zoonotic, meaning infected animals can potentially expose people through infected body fluids such as urine. If leptospirosis is suspected, appropriate hygiene and protective measures are important.

If your pet has been exposed to floodwater and starts showing signs of illness, donโt wait for symptoms to worsen. Have them checked by your veterinarian.
