Gucci & Pepsi

Nutrition differs based on your dog’s breed, age, lifestyle and health status.

Dogs are biologically diverse, their nutrition is individualized and not nutritionally uniform.

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” diet in canine nutrition.

Why does it differ?

✅ Breed
📌 Breed determines growth rate, body composition, digestive efficiency and inherited disease risk.
📌 Large and giant breeds require tightly controlled phosphorus, calcium and energy density during growth to prevent orthopedic diseases.
📌 Smaller breeds have higher metabolic rates and are prone to hypoglycemia and dental disease.

✅ Age
📌Nutritional needs shifts as dogs move through growth, adulthood and senior life.
📌 Puppies, adult and senior dogs should have different diets.

✅Lifestyle
📌 A sedentary indoor dog and an athletic working dog have different caloric and nutritional needs.
📌 Active dogs require higher energy density, fat utilization and antioxidant support.
📌 Indoor dogs and/ or spayed & neutered need different calories to avoid obesity.

✅ Nutrition as THERAPY
📌 Disease changes how nutrients are absorbed, metabolized and tolerated.
📌 Patients with gastrointestinal issues, kidney, heart, liver and skin diseases require different diets.
📌 In cases like these, nutrition is not supportive- it is therapeutic.

Gucci’s already a senior dog while Pepsi’s a young adult.

We recently detected something in Gucci’s kidneys so he’s on meds & renal diet.

Pepsi’s strong as an ox so he just continues to eat his regular dog food.

Two well-pampered poochies, their wellness is their Pawmom’s top priority.

Basics are Boring! Or is it?

Routine & repetitive clinical measures feel like a bore and a chore. It is often go unnoticed until a health crisis occurs.

Prevention. This is always overlooked.
Why? Because:
✅ There’s no spectacle. It is less visually compelling compared to emergencies.
✅ There’s no crisis.
✅ Low emotional urgency because it is PROACTIVE not reactive.
✅ Results are not immediate. The value of prevention is proven months or years. NOT in a single consult.
✅ Patients stay normal and “seemed healthy.”

But pawkids are different. They may look normal and healthy outside but something’s lurking inside them, without YOU (Pawrent) knowing it.

Disease whispers and it gets louder. When it already got your attention, it’s may be too late.

Here at Pawprints🐾🐾🐾, we:
💚 Focus on QUALITY OF LIFE, not just life itself.
💚 Do cost- effective & ethically sound approach.
🎯 Prevention avoids expensive and invasive treatments later.
💚 Detect health changes early, when they are easiest to manage.
💚 Reduce pain, suffering and emergency situations.
🎯 Today’s emergency was preventable months or years ago.
💚 Proactive than Reactive.
🎯 Reactive: Treatment fixes what is broken. Treat disease once it appears.
🎯 Proactive: Prevention protects what is still whole. Predict, prevent & detect diseases early.
💚 Prevention is NOT THE ABSENCE of treatment. It redefines WHEN and HOW intervention occurs.
🎯 Early intervention, routine, repetitive preventative measures and early screenings are all still active medical care just applied earlier.

Our goal is simple:
🐾 Keep your paw kids healthy, comfortable and thriving for as long as possible- not just treat disease when it appears.
🐾 Prevention is an investment for your peace of mind and your pawkid’s lifelong health.

Here’s Summer.

She came in with bouts of vomiting for 2-3 days. We did health screening and early detection tests. It turned out her cPL (canine pancreatic lipase) was way beyond normal levels.

Beyond that, nothing alarming to worry about.
She just followed our nutritional correction plan & clinical guidance.

Just like the traditional, old-school, “preppy” clothes Summer’s wearing, basic tests and early detection screenings are quite boring.

But what’s considered a bore is the most strategic and cost-effective approach in clinical setting.

And Summer can attest to that.

19/12/2025

Do dogs & cats have menopause?

You all love your paw kids. You even equate them as hoomans. But they’re created different, physiologically.

Here are the differences:

⭕️ Cycles & Frequency
🙋‍♀️ Humans: Menstrual Cycle
🔹This occurs year round. Average length is 28 days but varies among individuals.
🐾 Dogs & Cats: Estrous Cycle
🔸Frequency varies by species. For dogs every 6-7 months while cats are seasonally polyestrous & induced ovulators.

⭕️ Bleeding
🙋‍♀️ Menstrual Cycle:
🔹Regular uterine shedding & visible bleeding (menstruation)
🐾 Estrous Cycle:
🔸Vaginal bleeding occurs during Proestrus (first phase of heat cycle) but this is hormonal & vascular not shedding of the uterine lining.
🔸Dogs don’t have a “true menstruation”. They reabsorb the uterine lining when there’s no pregnancy.

⭕️ Sexual Receptivity
🙋‍♀️ Menstrual Cycle
🔹Humans can engage in sexual activity throughout the cycle and sexual receptivity is not restricted to ovulation.
🐾 Estrous Cycle
🔸Females are sexually receptive only during estrus or in heat when ovulation is imminent.
🔸When they’re not “in heat”, females refuse mating.

⭕️ Hormones & Clinical Implications
🙋‍♀️ Menstrual Cycle
🔹Dominated by estrogen & progesterone fluctuations.
🔸 Menstruation happens when there’s failure of implantation.
🐾 Estrous Cycle
🔸 Progesterone rises after ovulation regardless of pregnancy.
🔸 The prolonged luteal phase is the reason why dogs can develop pseudopregnancy & pyometra.

⭕️ Menopause
🙋‍♀️ Menstrual Cycle
🔹Yes, this is the time when a woman’s ovaries stop producing hormones and menstrual period stops.
🐾 Estrous Cycle
🔸NO. Females remain reproductively cyclic for life as long as their ovaries are intact.
🔸They can continue to have heat cycles into their senior age.
🔸 They don’t have a biological end to their reproductive years.

This is the reason why we’re like a broken record when we say “SPAY! Your pawkids should be spayed!”

Here’s Andrea

She’s quite old & has Pyometra.

Her procedure was very risky because aside from her low platelet & low RBC count, her SDMA is very high.

Doing a surgical procedure (Pyo-Spay) with an impaired kidney function is fatal.

Andrea could be in peril.

But we called the shots to do the high-risk procedure.

Thank goodness Andrea survived without any complications!

Andrea’s story doesn’t end there yet. After recovering from her Pyo, she will start her impaired kidney function treatment.

It will be a Happy Christmas for the whole fam because they already shed a bucket of tears before the surgery thinking she won’t survive.

Yet, Andrea did!

Prevention Before Prescription

Mochi

She stops by on her regular schedule because:
🎯An emergency today can be prevented months or years ago.
🎯 Healthy pet today means stronger pet tomorrow.
🎯 Proactive care like vaccines, parasite control, right nutrition, regular wellness checks are cheaper & practical than sending your pets to the Vet when it’s already sick & beyond saving.
🎯 Disease whispers. It will scream loud when it’s already full-blown. We need to catch illness early to save lives, stress & cost.

In these cold, rainy months, Mochi visits us with different color of socks.

But today, they’re in matching colors with her Pawmom.
We’re so green with envy!😁

Testing The Waters

Xyla, Fryza, Venice & Aaron from RSASH (Roxas Stand Alone Senior High).

We did test the waters during your 10-day Work Immersion here. The time to learn about the ropes of Vet Medicine on introductory level.

You all love animals alright, but sometimes loving animals is not enough.

It takes grit, ruthless determination, long years of hard labor, persistence and mental toughness.

You all have the potential to become future Vets.

But in the middle of your stay here, it turned out none of you don’t want to become future Vets anymore for valid reasons: the course is too long, afraid of blood, loves the Creative Industry more than VetMed or maybe it’s too hard to study all sorts of animals?🤔

Whatever your apprehensions, that’s all valid.

You have the right to choose.
And the right to change your mind.

As we part ways today, may you learned something from us here.

Thank you for the framed group photo you gave us. Although we didn’t post a similar copy of the framed photo here, the frame is already on display next to the paintings given by the previous work immersion students.

Next school year, if you won’t choose Veterinary Medicine, always follow your heart & what you truly want. It’s your life compass.

Au Revoir! 💜💚🧡

Jack Didn’t Pass The Test

He’s a 2 year-old Golden Retriever who tried to impregnate 2 females this year but failed.

Pawmom wanted to make sure what’s wrong so Jack got tested.

We did Microscopic Semen Analysis.
This is a microscopic examination to check the s***m morphology (shape), s***m motility (movement) & s***m concentration to evaluate male fertility.

🟣This is Jack’s Semen Analysis Report:

✳️ S***m Motility
3 Types:
1. Progressive
2. Non- Progressive
3. Immotile
🔸All s***m cells should have a Progressive movement. It should move upward & forward to reach the egg cell.
🔸As for Jack’s, his result is Non-Progressive Motility. His s***m moves but not upwards. It all move in circles, sidewards and downward movement. Some are immotile. This is a sign of poor semen quality.

✳️ S***m Concentration
🔸 We used the Modified Neubauer Chamber to check this parameter.
🔸 Jack’s result was below 15 million/ml.

✳️S***m Morphology
🔸 This is used to check the s***m’s shape.
🔸 We did S***m Staining using the Hematoxylin & Eosin Stain.
🔸 We found out that some of Jack’s s***m cells has no tail, bent tail and very few double tail.

With the results of the 3 s***m parameters, it’s obvious why Jack wasn’t able to produce puppies.

Pawmom’s questions now have answers.

When in doubt, always get tested.
Just like Jack.

Nala & Clint

These two didn’t know or meet each other personally but they have something in common.

It’s their birthday month!

Dainty girl Nala like the white daisies on her floral dress she’s wearing, turns 3 years old today!

Gorgeous hunk Clint turned 6 years old last week!

They both came in for their annual health checks, blood work up and early detection tests.

For their routine checks (CBC) & blood work up (Blood Chem) results?
ALL NORMAL👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Not only that, the result for their kidney biomarker SDMA & cardiac biomarker Pro-BNP are ALL NORMAL, too!🎉🎉🎉

SDMA (Symmetric Dimethylarginine) & Pro- BNP (B-type natriuretic peptide) are part of our early detection tests when we do annual health checks.

🟢 How SDMA & Pro-BNP work:

🟣 SDMA
🔺 This is an early biomarker for kidney function in dogs and cats.
🔺 This can detect reduced kidney function earlier.
🔺 Unlike Creatinine, SDMA is not affected by your dog or cat’s muscle mass that is either underweight or highly muscular making it a more reliable indicator of kidney function.
🔺 SDMA rises when there is 25-40% loss of kidney function. Creatine does not rise until 75% of the kidneys are damaged.
🔺Your pawkid could have normal BUN & Crea but is not the reason to rejoice. BUN & Crea can have normal results but without checking the SDMA level, your pawkid may already have Stage 1 Chronic Kidney Disease without you knowing it.

🟣 Pro- BNP
🔺A cardiac biomarker to evaluate heart muscle stretch & strain.
🔺When the heart’s ventricles stretch due to volume, pressure overload or myocardial stress, it releases a hormone called B-type natriuretic peptide.
🔺Pro-BNP can be used:
🧡To screen early heart disease for apparently healthy dogs and cats.
🧡To differentiate heart vs respiratory problems.
🧡To monitor the severity & progression of heart disease.

It’s always better to be a proactive than reactive when it comes to pawkid’s health.

They say in this generation, “Pets are the new kids. Plants are the new pets!”

For sure, Nala & Clint are not just mere pets. They’re the precious pawkids to their hooman family!

With their ALL NORMAL results, Nala & Clint’s pawmoms have legit reason to celebrate their pawkids’ barkday!

Happiest Birthday Nala & Clint🎉🎉🎉🎉

When Will Prevention End?

“Tapos na purga at bakuna ng puppy/kitten ko. Graduate na sya.”

Is it?
Sorry but it’s not yet done.

🟢 Prevention isn’t something you finish. It’s a lifelong process. In every stage of your pawkid’s life, the responsibility to prevent continues in another form.

🔺 For puppyhood & kittenhood, prevention focuses on worming & vaccinations.
🔺 For an adult dog or cat, prevention focuses on nutrition, early detection, dental health & weight management.
🔺 For seniors, the focus shifts on mobility issues, comfort, pain management & organ screening.

🟢 Prevention resets.
Your pawkid’s life changes when a major milestone happens in their pawrents’ lives.

🔺 New environment.
🔺 Moving into a new country.
🔺 Moving into a new home when pawdad & pawmom decided to get married.
🔺 A new human baby in the family.
🔺 Seasons like summer or rainy months.

These changes mean new exposure to diseases and other risk factors. New preventive measures and priorities are changed.

🟢 Prevention ends when there’s nothing left to protect.

🔺In senior pawkids, when they almost reach the end of their lives and they are slightly suffering, prevention changes for their comfort preventing fear & distress. The main preventative goal is pain management until the very end.

🟢 Prevention is a mindset to prolong your pawkid’s life. It’s for you, pawrents, to have more time with your pawkids in every milestone of your life.

For sisters Kionah & Alexia, everything’s done for them but Pawmom chose to stay one step ahead where disease finds no room to grow. That’s why they always see us even if they’re not sick, yet.

You two, Kionah & Alexia with your twinning frilly pink gingham dresses, are rocking your scheduled clinic visit in style!

30/10/2025

It’s a wrap for the 1st Philippine College of Canine Practitioners Post-Graduate Conference.

Three days of new insights and new pieces of valuable information for the clinical practice.

AI technology in veterinary medicine, MIS (Minimal Invasive Surgery), biomarkers for kidney and liver health. All topics were medically interesting and insightful.

The topic about Dialysis in dogs & cats piqued my interest the most.

Systemic disease is silent. Your paw kids may not show any signs. But when clinical signs appear, 75% of the organ function is already damaged.

Again, (as we always reiterate), before grave things happen, we have to be PROACTIVE not REACTIVE to your pet’s well-being.

Annual detection tests cost you PhP 5,000-6,000. Depends upon the health package that you will choose.

But for a single dialysis session?
Php 15,000 for cats.
Php 40,000-50,000 for dogs.

Which do you think is more practical?
Refer to our July 28, & Oct 10 2025 post.

Prevention and early detection still holds the key for the overall health of your paw kids.

You are already spending either way. Why not spend to celebrate when your pawkid’s health screening results are normal? It’s proactive spending. You can dance 💃🏻 🕺 your worries away and have peace of mind.

But if clinical signs already appear? It’s reactive spending. You are spending both your money and emotions. Worry, anxiety and even worse when you lost your pet because it’s already late. Losing lots of money and your pet at the same time. Double heartbreak.💔💔

YOU CHOOSE.

Prevention matters. It’s the real deal!
