πΆπ©Ί CASE FEATURE: AURAL HEMATOMA IN A DOG π©ΊπΆ
Meet Dos, a 6-year-old male neutered dog who was presented with an aural hematoma. Interestingly, Dos also has a previous history of aural hematoma involving his left ear, which was previously managed through surgical intervention.
π WHAT IS AN AURAL HEMATOMA?
An aural hematoma is a collection of blood between the layers of the ear flap, commonly caused by the rupture of small blood vessels following excessive head shaking, scratching, or trauma.
Some possible underlying causes include:
πΎ Bacterial or yeast ear infections
πΎ Ear mites and other parasites
πΎ Allergies and underlying skin disease
πΎ Foreign bodies or irritation in the ear canal
πΎ Trauma or excessive scratching and head shaking
π WHY IS SURGERY OFTEN RECOMMENDED?
Simply draining the hematoma may provide temporary relief, but the space created between the tissues can remain and may fill with blood again, resulting in recurrence.
Surgical intervention allows the accumulated blood to be evacuated while the separated layers of the ear flap are brought back together and the dead space reduced. This promotes proper healing and helps minimize the risk of recurrence and permanent deformity of the ear.
π©Ί TREATMENT MAY INCLUDE:
βοΈ Surgical evacuation of the hematoma
βοΈ Suturing or other techniques to eliminate dead space
βοΈ Appropriate pain management
βοΈ Treatment of any underlying bacterial, fungal, or parasitic ear disease
βοΈ Proper ear cleaning and follow-up care
β οΈ REMEMBER: An aural hematoma is often a sign that there is an underlying problem causing irritation to the ear. Treating only the swelling may not be enough. Identifying and managing the underlying cause is an important part of preventing recurrence.
For Dos, addressing his current hematoma while also considering the factors that may have contributed to its development is essential for achieving the best possible outcome. πΆπ
Healthy ears start with finding the cause, not just treating the swelling. πΎ
