VetALERT 3.0 strengthens veterinary diagnostics through hands-on training

Veterinarians gathered at the CTU Facility Centrum of Cebu Technological University–Danao Campus on September 1–3, 2026 for VetALERT 3.0, an intensive three-day training program aimed at strengthening diagnostic competence in pathology and developing practical, transferrable skills.

The program brought together veterinarians from the academe, the local government units, diagnostic laboratories, and the DA-Bureau of Animal Industry for a combination of lectures, interactive learning sessions, and hands-on activities. The necropsy covered chicken, pig, and goats as well as blood collection procedures in pigs, examination of gross lesions and diagnostic procedures under the guidance of experienced veterinary professionals.

Among the resource speakers were experts from the Global Health Pathology Network (GHPN), including Dr. Corrie Brown, Dr. Katherine Scott, and Dr. Daniel Felipe Murillo. Local experts who also contributed included Dr. Raul Berro, Dr. Phil Alphonsus Alilin, Dr. Romeo Gundran, Dr. Christian Espejo, Dr. Ma. Shella Ordinario, Dr. Adrian Ybañez, and Dr. Marvin Bryan Salinas. The sessions covered epidemiology, histopathology, morphologic diagnosis, and interactive discussions on various pathology scenarios.

VetALERT is led by the Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA), Center for Transboundary Animal Diseases (CenTrAD) in Central Luzon State University (CLSU) in collaboration with the GHPN, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), and Cebu Technological University (CTU), VetALERT 3.0 underscored the importance of practical, competency-based training in advancing veterinary diagnostics and strengthening the capacity of veterinarians to detect and respond to animal health challenges.

The Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) successfully conducted “Next Generation Poultry Practice: Precision, Prevention, and Performance,” drawing a full house of veterinarians and animal health professionals eager to expand their knowledge and stay updated on emerging developments in poultry practice.

The session featured Dr. Dennis Umali, who discussed molecular epidemiology; Dr. Sherwin Camba, who shared insights on poultry production and medicine; and Engr. Aris Salomon, who explored the role of information technology solutions in the veterinary field. Their presentations provided participants with valuable perspectives on how science, technology, and innovation can contribute to more effective and future-ready poultry practice.

The learning session also provided participants with three Continuing Professional Development (CPD) points, reinforcing the importance of continuing education in strengthening professional competence and keeping veterinarians abreast of advances in their respective fields.

The PVMA expressed its appreciation to all attendees, speakers, and partners who contributed to the success of the event. The association looks forward to organizing more educational programs and professional activities that provide veterinarians with meaningful opportunities to learn, grow, and contribute to the continuing advancement of the veterinary profession.

The Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) brought its commitment to nurturing the next generation of veterinarians to Central Luzon State University through “One Health, One Mission, One Future,” a One Health and Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) seminar for veterinary students held on August 24, 2026.

The gathering equipped future veterinarians with knowledge and perspectives on antimicrobial stewardship, One Health, ethics, and the vital role of the veterinary profession in safeguarding the health of humans, animals, and the environment.

With distinguished speakers from the veterinary community, government, industry, and academe, the seminar emphasized that becoming a veterinarian goes beyond clinical practice. It is a lifelong commitment to responsible leadership, collaboration, ethical decision-making, and service. By engaging students early, PVMA continues to help them understand the broader impact and responsibility that comes with the veterinary profession.

For years, the PVMA has remained steadfast in its mission to inspire, empower, and prepare future generations of Filipino veterinarians to lead with competence, compassion, and purpose. As these students take their first steps toward the profession, the PVMA hopes to inspire them to become champions of One Health; veterinarians who will not only care for animals, but also contribute meaningfully to the health and well-being of communities and the world.
