Across parts of Thailand, materials once used for advertising are finding a surprising second life. Large vinyl billboards that previously hung above highways are collected after campaigns end instead of being thrown away. Because the material is thick, waterproof, and durable, volunteers and local groups cut and reshape the banners into small shelters designed for stray dogs.

The recycled sheets are stretched over simple wooden or metal frames, forming sturdy roofs and walls that protect animals from heavy rain and harsh sunlight. Lightweight yet strong, the shelters can be placed in alleyways, parks, or quiet street corners where stray dogs commonly rest. The billboard material also withstands tropical weather, allowing the structures to last much longer than ordinary cardboard or fabric shelters.

This approach solves two problems at once. It reduces large amounts of advertising waste while providing protection for animals that would otherwise sleep exposed to the elements. By turning colorful billboards into practical shelters, communities transform something temporary and commercial into something lasting and compassionate for the city’s street dogs.
