To beat heat stress, you have to change when your broilers eat. 🕒🌾

Digesting feed generates a massive amount of internal metabolic heat. This heat peaks about 3 to 5 hours after a meal. If that digestive heat peak coincides with the hottest ambient temperatures of the afternoon, it can easily lead to fatal heat stroke (Onagbesan et al., 2023).

Smart farmers practice Feed Withdrawal to protect their birds:

☀️ Day Time: Remove or lift feeders 4 to 6 hours before the hottest part of the day. Keeping their digestive tracts empty during peak heat keeps their internal temperatures lower (Nawaz et al., 2021).

🌙 Night Time: Reintroduce feed during the cooler evening and nighttime hours. Broilers will happily eat when the house cools down, keeping their overall growth on track.

Shifting the feeding schedule minimizes heat load and preserves feed efficiency without sacrificing final market weights.

Are your ventilation fans actually cooling your birds, or just moving hot air around? 💨🤔

In closed-house poultry setups, air velocity is your primary weapon against heat stress. Moving air creates a "wind-chill effect" that pulls heat away from the broiler’s body, making the temperature feel several degrees cooler than what the thermometer actually reads.

To make tunnel ventilation work effectively for heat mitigation:

🔸 Maintain Air Speed: Target an air velocity of at least 2.5 to 3.0 meters per second at bird level to break the hot air boundary layer surrounding them.

🔸 Check for Dead Zones: Ensure there are no stagnant air pockets in the corners or center of the house where heat can trap birds.

🔸 Clean Fan Blades & Louvers: Dust accumulation can reduce fan efficiency by up to 30%. Regular maintenance prevents airflow drops when you need them most.

High air velocity can lower effective temperatures by up to 5°C, giving your broilers the relief they need to keep growing.
