When Should Young Birds Start Training?

One of the most common questions among beginners is when to start training young racing pigeons. Starting too early can overwhelm them, while starting too late may slow their development.

Young birds should first become fully familiar with their loft and surroundings before any road training begins. Most fanciers start tossing young birds when they are around 10 to 12 weeks old, healthy, and confidently trapping back into the loft.

Before road training, make sure your young birds can:

✅ Fly strongly around the loft for at least 30–60 minutes
✅ Respond quickly when called for feeding
✅ Trap confidently without hesitation
✅ Show good health and feather condition

Begin with very short tosses of 1–3 kilometers and gradually increase the distance as the birds gain experience. The goal is to build confidence and navigation skills, not to test endurance too early.

Remember, every loft develops at a different pace. Watch the birds closely and let their condition determine when they are ready.

A well-prepared young bird learns faster, gains confidence sooner, and has a better chance of becoming a future champion. 🕊️🏆

We achieved 2nd, 3rd and 5th National Preliminary in The Netherlands. The pigeon shown below is our first arrival 😍

🥈 2nd National Preliminary
Father: Grandson Jef x Queen
