Patient Story 🐾 | Happy the Shihtzu

🐶 Happy, a Shih Tzu, was brought to our clinic as an emergency case at 7:00 AM on Thursday due to difficulty giving birth (dystocia). Her second puppy was delivered at around 10:00 PM the previous night, after which labor failed to progress.

Because prolonged labor can place both the mother and remaining puppies at serious risk, an emergency cesarean section was immediately performed.

During the procedure, three puppies were retrieved.
Sadly, two puppies were already non-viable, while one puppy was delivered alive. The dam, Happy, was successfully stabilized and recovered after surgery.

📌 Educational Notes for Furparents:
📝 Prolonged or stalled labor is a medical emergency
📝 Small and brachycephalic breeds, such as Shihtzus, are at higher risk for dystocia
📝 Delays in intervention can result in loss of puppies and life-threatening complications for the mother
📝 Early veterinary assessment greatly improves survival outcomes

🐾 When in doubt during labor, seek veterinary care right away

Patient Story 🐾 | Minnie the Dachshund

Meet Minnie, our brave little dachshund 💛
Last week of December, she underwent cystotomy to remove bladder stones. She returned in January for her recheck—happy, comfortable, and back to her normal self ✨

🪨 Factors that increase the risk for bladder stone formation include:
• Urinary tract infection
• Diet (low-moisture; high mineral; high protein)

Unfortunately, Minnie later came back as an emergency with a painful, distended abdomen. X-rays confirmed gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV / bloat)—a life-threatening condition that needs immediate intervention.

💨 Factors that increase the risk for GDV include:
• Dogs that eat fast / rapid eating
• Diet mainly based on kibbles
• Deep-chested dogs

⏱️ Thanks to quick action and her furparents alertness, Minnie underwent gastropexy, recovered well, and was able to go home 🏡

💊 Home care plan:
• Continue prescribed oral medications.
• Slow feeder / Puzzle feeder recommended to help reduce rapid eating.

Minnie is now resting and healing—and we’re so proud of this little fighter 🧡
