One of the quick, safe, and cost-effective ways we diagnose skin conditions in dogs is the Acetate Tape Technique. This painless procedure helps us collect and examine surface skin cells, bacteria, yeast, and superficial mites.

How it works:
🔹 Sample Collection – A 3–5 cm piece of clear acetate tape is gently pressed onto the affected skin or hair coat several times to collect skin debris and microorganisms.

🔹 Skin Squeezing (Optional) – When looking for hair follicle mites such as Demodex, the skin may be gently pinched before applying the tape.

🔹 Slide Mounting – The tape is placed onto a microscope slide for examination.

🔹 Staining – The slide is stained using a Romanowsky-type stain (such as Diff-Quik) to help identify microorganisms.

🔹 Microscopic Examination – The sample is examined under a microscope to detect Malassezia yeast, bacteria, and superficial mites, allowing us to recommend the most appropriate treatment.

🐾 Is your furbaby experiencing skin problems?
Hair loss? Severe itching? Scaling? Dandruff? Redness? Pimples? (Part 3)

A TRICHOGRAM is a quick, minimally invasive diagnostic test performed by veterinarians. A small number of hairs are gently plucked and examined under a microscope using a few drops of mineral oil. This test helps evaluate the hair growth cycle and detect parasites, fungal infections, or signs of self-inflicted trauma caused by excessive scratching or licking.

What is needed for a trichogram?
✔️ Hemostats (preferably rubber-tipped or curved)
✔️ Clean glass slides and cover slips
✔️ Mineral oil or 10–20% potassium hydroxide (KOH) solution
✔️ Light microscope
How is the sample collected?
• About 30–40 hairs are gently plucked from the affected area (such as areas with hair loss, scaling, or crusting).
• The hairs are placed in a drop of mineral oil on a glass slide, all facing the same direction for easier examination.
• Whiskers (vibrissae) are never plucked.
What can a trichogram reveal?
🔹 Hair Roots (Growth Cycle)
Anagen (growing phase): Large, rounded, active roots.
Telogen (resting phase): Dry, keratinized, spear-shaped roots.
A predominance of telogen hairs may suggest hormonal or endocrine disorders.
🔹 Hair Tips
Frayed or broken tips: Often indicate excessive licking, chewing, or scratching.
Tapered tips: Suggest natural hair shedding rather than breakage.
🔹 Hair Shafts & Hair Follicles
A trichogram can help detect:
Demodex mites
Lice
Cheyletiella mites and their eggs
Fungal spores or hyphae associated with ringworm (dermatophytosis)
Hair shaft abnormalities seen in conditions such as color dilution alopecia and black hair follicular dysplasia
💡 A trichogram is especially useful for examining sensitive areas, such as around the eyes, where skin scraping may be difficult or uncomfortable.
