On the day of the dramatic rescue, John Byrne was sitting with his pet rabbit Barney on a footpath near O’Connell Bridge in Dublin, accepting donations from passersby. Suddenly, a young man grabbed Barney and threw him into the river.

Without hesitation, the 37-year-old jumped into the water to save his beloved pet. After firefighters pulled them both to safety, Byrne even gave Barney the kiss of life. 🫶💚

The incredible story quickly gained attention, with Byrne being praised as a hero and honored with a “Compassionate Citizen Award” from the Animal Rights Action Network. The attacker later pleaded guilty to animal cruelty and was sentenced to four months in prison.

⚠️ HEAT ALERT & POSSIBLE BROWNOUT ADVISORY ⚠️

With the extremely high heat index lately and possible rotational brownouts in some areas, please monitor your rabbits, guinea pigs, and chinchillas closely. These animals are highly sensitive to heat and can quickly develop heat stress or heat stroke, especially during power interruptions when fans and air-conditioning stop.

🐰 Rabbits
🐹 Guinea pigs
🤍 Chinchillas

Please prepare ahead and keep them cool and safe:

❄️ Place them in the coolest, most ventilated area of your home
❄️ Prepare frozen water bottles, cooling tiles, frozen towels, or ceramic surfaces
❄️ Ensure unlimited clean drinking water at all times
❄️ Avoid direct sunlight and enclosed spaces with poor airflow
❄️ Prepare backup cooling methods in case of brownouts
❄️ Limit handling during the hottest hours of the day

Watch closely for signs of heat stress:
⚠️ Panting
⚠️ Drooling
⚠️ Weakness or lethargy
⚠️ Warm ears/body
⚠️ Loss of appetite
⚠️ Lying flat or unresponsive behavior

Chinchillas are especially sensitive and temperatures above 25°C may already become dangerous for them.

Please do not underestimate the heat. Prevention and preparation can save lives. Stay safe and keep your precious furbabies cool and hydrated during this extreme weather. 🙏💛
