Pasay Pups

Pasay Pups A group of caring individuals dedicated to making a difference in the lives of dogs and cats - and people! - in an impoverished area of Pasay city.

What started out as one person caring for half a dozen animals, has become a great deal more. There are hundreds of dogs and cats in this small area of Pasay City, the Philippines, who we do our best to care for with limited finances. Every weekend, the Pasay Pups team volunteers in a impoverished neighborhood to provide basic care to the animals who call this area home, including meeting their ba

sic veterinary needs, such as parasite control, preventing infections in minor wounds, giving flea and tick prevention, and curing skin conditions like sarcoptic mange or fungal infections. We also provide food, love, baths, and walks for chained dogs. Among the most important work we do is provide spay/neuter and vaccination services. All services are provided to guardians at no cost. Not only does this reduce future expenses of caring for this group and help control the population of dogs and cats in the area, it also aids the people who struggle desperately to care for the animals they already have. Spaying and neutering reduces aggression in animals, as well as their risk of reproductive cancers. Most importantly, the people in this poverty stricken area don’t have to worry about feeding litters of puppies and kittens. We also operate a weekly kids’ program in Sarhento Mariano Cemetery. The children in this area live in severe poverty and many do not attend school. Many families are food poor – eating food from the trash, locally known as “pagpag” just to survive – and there is no running water, electricity, or proper sanitation in the cemetery. The mission of the kids’ program is to provide the children in this area with a positive space where they can learn, be happy and confident, and just be kids. You can help us help these children and animals by donating via PayPal (see the button on our main page).

We did it again! 💪😍 Thanks to our generous supporters and volunteers, we distributed relief packs - including 3,750 kilograms of rice - to 440 households in the cemetery. Each family received 10 kilograms of rice; a kilogram of pasta with sauce; canned corn; and soap. Families with pets also received two kilograms of dog food.

We know this aid goes a long way in helping the families in the cemetery get through lockdown, and hopefully reduces some of the burden on their shoulders.

We are so very grateful to our volunteers and to each and every person who donated - whether it was 10,000 or 100 Php - YOU made this possible. We know that when you donate funds, you are putting your trust in us, and we are very thankful for that. We appreciate everyone's understanding that donating monetary towards this effort, rather than in-kind, enables us to buy more (wholesale!) and makes sure our packs are uniform and that distribution is fair, orderly, and that most importantly, there is enough for every single household (we have a strict policy against first-come, first-serve distributions - all our distributions are ticketed to ensure that every needy family, couple, or person receives this vital aid). ❤️

We would also like to thank our favorite pupper Ating for being Head of Security/Clean-Up/Good Vibes. Her service of cleaning up the spilled dog food, and taking naps with her tongue out was instrumental to creating a positive work environment 😂

On Saturday, we held a spay/neuter clinic in partnership with PETA Asia and PPBCC Philippine Pet Birth Control Center Foundation where 236 companion animals were sterilized 🎉 The 181 cats and 55 dogs also received combination and anti-rabies vaccines. Many thanks to the amazing team of PPBCC vets and to all our tireless volunteers for making this possible! The single most important thing that we can do to protect animals from the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes is to spay or neuter them.

Thank you to The Guardian for featuring our work and the community of Sarhento Mariano ❤ Internet applause for Lex at Lady Freethinker and photographer Aaron Gekoski who worked so hard to make this story happen 👏👏👏

If you're not familiar with our work or the challenges our community has faced during the pandemic, this is a great read (and the photos are amazing!).

In a project for the Lady Freethinker NGO, photographer Aaron ‘Bertie’ Gekoski has teamed up with Ashley Fruno, founder of Pasay Pups, to document the impact of poverty and the Covid-19 pandemic on people and pets living in public cemeteries in Pasay, the Philippines

Most people will smile when they see cute puppy faces, but we're not smiling 😔 These puppies - like so many others - were born into a world already overpopulated with dogs and cats. They are cute now, but they will grow, and like their parents, they will keep reproducing.

The single most important thing that we can do to save cats and dogs from all the suffering and death that their overpopulation causes is to spay and neuter them. Please, spay and neuter your pets and community animals in your area. Tell your friends and family to do the same!

The look of pure love, or errr, desire for snacks 😍😍😍

We're sorry, friends, for not posting as regularly as we should be! Lockdown times are busy times. We're hoping that lockdown will be lifted on April 30th and we'll be able to visit our animal friends regularly again.

Thanks to the amazing efforts of our tireless volunteers, Pasay Pups distributed relief goods to 276 families and 139 couples and individuals living amongst the graves in Sarhento Mariano cemetery yesterday. This is a community that struggles with food security on a daily basis and with Metro Manila back in hard lockdown, is cut off from their source of income once again.

The distribution included 3,500 kgs of rice; 1,080 bars of soap; 350 kgs of monggo; 350 each of cans of corn, peas, and vermicelli noodles; 600 kgs of dog food for families with pets; and 580 kilograms of vegetables (sitaw, tomatoes, sibuyas, kamote and sayote).

We'd like to thank our donors for the support and trust. We know you have many choices in where to spend your hard-earned money, and it's a time where many charities are asking for donations - we are so grateful for your faith in us. A special thanks goes to CGI CSR for their donation to make this event possible. ❤👏👏

Virtual cheers to our volunteers who risked their safety and suffered through the extreme heat for eight to ten hours of unloading, packing and distributing in double masks and face shields. They are champions. 😊

URGENT: We need funding to secure relief goods for 350 households this week. Knocking on your kind hearts, any amount will do ❤❤❤ We're less than half way to the money we need to make it happen.

The community who will benefit lives amongst the graves in a public cemetery. The situation there is difficult on the average day (no running water, no electricity, open defecation, and many families eat food from the trash to survive). It's even more difficult during lockdown now that the community's source of income (selling items for recycling that have been pulled from the trash) has been cut off.

Here's what we're buying & why we need your help:
Rice – 139,300 Php
Monggo – 29,750 Php
Soap – PENDING SUPPLIER
Vegetables – 19,725 Php
Misc food items (noodles, canned corn, canned peas) – 30,408 Php
Dog food – 34,500 Php

TOTAL NEEDED: 253, 683 Php
Total raised so far: 102,931 Php

URGENT: DONATIONS NEEDED FOR LOCKDOWN RELIEF GOODS
As Metro Manila shifts back to hard lockdown tomorrow, the cemetery community we work in will be hard hit. With the majority of businesses not allowed to open during the next week, the community's main source of income (reselling materials scavenged from the trash) will be cut off.

The hard lockdown is expected to end next Sunday, but the previous lockdown was extended many times and lasted for months. Sadly, we expect the same to happen again, at least for several weeks, and are preparing to distribute emergency relief packs to 350 households in the next week. *In the event that lockdown is not extended, packs will be distributed regardless to a community that still badly needs them.

DONATIONS ARE NEEDED
We plan to buy 10kgs of rice per family, vegetables, monggo, soap, and anything else we can reasonably source in this short time.

Mange is an incredibly irritating skin condition that is caused my microscopic mites. It often affects malnourished or weak animals worse than others. Mange causes hair loss and extreme itchiness, and some dogs develop wounds from scratching and biting. Fortunately, this condition is easy to treat, and we're incredibly grateful to our donors for helping us bring relief to dogs like this one. If you want to contribute, we accept donations via PayPal ([email protected]). Thank you - from the doggos - for your continued support 🐾🐾🐾

Balat suffered a large cut on the back of her leg, we suspect from stepping on glass or steel roofing material. With antibiotics and bandage change every few days, Balat is going to heal just fine. Get well soon, sweet Balat! ❤️🐾

Do you love animals and want to join our team? We're now ready to accept new volunteers ❤️ Volunteers must be comfortable interacting with cats and dogs, and understand the risk of working in the community. If you want to join us, please fill out the application here: https://buff.ly/301Cb0g. After you submit the application, a representative will contact you to arrange your orientation. Only Saturday schedules are available.

Volunteers are provided with KN95 masks, and safety protocols are enforced. However, due to the fact that the communities we work in are indigent areas where crowding is common, we do not recommend volunteering for people with comorbidities, or those who live with high-risk individuals.
